The Range Rover Velar has won the World Car Design of the Year title at the 2018 World Car Awards. It may be only the second most affordable Range Rover in the Range Rover lineup, after the Range Rover Evoque, it looks every bit a worthy edition. But whilst this bit of news deserves to be celebrated, another little bit of news is interesting for those who would want to own the Velar here in Malaysia. It will be reaching Malaysia sometime in April 2018 and it is local distributors Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia have already announced that they are taking bookings for the good looking SUV!
No idea what the exact specification will be when it is sold here but elsewhere, it is available with a choice of six powertrains, ranging from the clean and responsive 180PS 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel to the potent 380PS supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine. The most likely choice of powerplants would be the 2.0liter Ingenium petrol and the supercharged 3.0V6 petrol as Malaysia is predominantly a petrol engined market when it comes to premium SUVs.
Launched last year and named after the codename for the original concept Range Rovers of the late 1960s, the Range Rover Velar fills the space between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport. This super good looking premium compact SUV is designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK. It offers practicality, connectivity and capability (on and off-road) as expected from the Range Rover family. With the latest technology and the inclusion of more sustainable materials, this luxury SUV is designed to go 'Above and Beyond' - the new Range Rover motto.
According to Prof. Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover CEO, "(The) F-TYPE, Evoque, F-PACE (had previously won the Car of the Year Award) and now the Range Rover Velar wins the World Car of the Year design award. This means a lot to us. I feel very honoured and I want to thank all jury members for their trust and support in encouraging the Land Rover team to continue on their unique path. I also want to thank our Velar team for their passion and commitment, for going the extra mile to move boundaries for extraordinary solutions.”
The Range Rover Velar features super-slim Matrix Laser-LED headlights, flush deployable door handles and sleek Touch Pro Duo infotainment are all hallmarks of Range Rover’s reductionist design philosophy. As for me, I just think it looks awesome. A proper small Range Rover and one which is traditionally styled unlike the more fashion forward Evoque. This one appeals to those that want something unmistakably Range Rover from every angle.
In order to win the award, the Velar had strong challenge from the equally innovative Volvo XC60 SUV and the Lexus LC 500 to take the World Car Design of the Year award. The award was as voted for by the World Car Awards jury, comprising 82 influential motoring journalists from 24 countries. Velar’s success follows the 2017 double win for the Jaguar F-PACE. Two years in a row for Jaguar Land Rover. Amazing.
So yes, it is coming to our shores very soon. If you want to be informed on the very latest from JLR Malaysia, you can also register their interest and receive updates at www.landrover.com.my/keep-me- informed.
