UMW Toyota Motor Donates A Toyota Camry Hybrid to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

Recently UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. (UMWT), the distributors of Toyota here, made a donation of a Toyota Camry Hybrid to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The vehicle will be used for technical research and development study by the researchers and students who are studying under the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

This very meaningful donation is part UMW Toyota Motor's Corporate Social Responsibility in terms of social outreach. In the company's case, this involves the development of students from many levels of education, including institutions of higher learning like UTM here.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid is part of a special  project where researchers and students will try to research and develop new systems of future vehicle technology. This requires the understanding of current technology, hence the Camry Hybrid with its Active Safety Features (like the Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert) and Hybrid Powertrain technology. MJIIT, UTM is the pioneer and the only research group working in autonomous vehicle research in Malaysia focusing on driving behaviour, advance driver assistance system and self-driving vehicle.

The research also has close collaboration with Smart Mobility Research Center, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. The Hybrid vehicle is best candidate for this project due to its large capacity of battery supply to the self-driving system.

Another plus point is that the students (who most likely are training to be automotive engineers) would have the experience of handling the high voltage power and battery systems in a hybrid. Not many of the mechanics, technicians and engineers here in Malaysia have such exposure and only a handful of companies have actually reached out in terms of safely handling hybrid powertrains openly aside from the in-house training given to their after sales technicians. So this is a good way for others to learn of such systems.

Another note is the fact that UTM has collaborations with Japanese institutes of higher learning. No wonder UTM is ranked in the top 300 universities globally (topuniversities.com).
