The Range Rover Velar is Now On Sale - Prices Start at RM529,800++ [with short video]

What I think is the most beautiful SUV in recent years has just been launched in Malaysia. It isn't just me saying that the New Range Rover Velar is gorgeous, but it did win the Car Design of the Year at the 2018 World Car Awards recently. So my thoughts on its looks are somewhat justified, yes? First launched in early 2017, it finally makes it to our shores. Better late than never.

Anyway, the 2018 Range Rover Velar can be had in two variants here in Malaysia, the Velar (P250) which is priced at RM529,800 and the Velar R-Dynamic (P250) which is priced RM588,800 onwards. The selling price for these 2.0liter Ingenium engined variants are inclusive of 6% GST. Excludes Road Tax, Registration and Insurance. There is a third model, the 3.0liter V6 engine which can be specially ordered for you.

The Range Rover Velar is an 'extended length' compact SUV which sits in between the base Evoque premium compact crossover model and the larger, Range Rover Sport model. It brings that full sized Range Rover styling to a more compact package. I actually feel that this is a package that works well as the proportions of the Velar are so right and the size feels like it is actually suitable for maneuvering around tight city streets. It could be the perfect SUV for many including Yours Truly. Well, my bank manager does not think so actually.

The Velar’s monocoque chassis is aluminium-intensive. It features Jaguar Land Rover’s Lightweight Aluminium Architecture where aluminium alloys account for more than 81 percent of the body-in-white which is a figure no competitor can match to date. The aluminium-intensive body is light in weight and structurally stiff which allows the double-wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension a rigid platform for it to provide for agile handling, superior ride comfort and outstanding refinement. Its rigidity also delivers exceptional levels of crash protection too.

Unique features such as the flush deployable door handles and the Range Rover trademark rising gear knob are fitted to the Velar. It now adds an interesting dual touchscreen Touch Pro Duo infotainment system which is a main feature of the Velar’s interior. Currently this is the first Range Rover to feature such a system.

The Touch Pro Duo features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens integrated seamlessly behind  secret-until-lit surfaces. The Touch Pro Duo system allows the driver to multitask with greater safety by using two screens simultaneously. The lower screen can be used to make a call without interfering the navigation system on the upper screen. Other technology-advanced features include a Head Up Display (in the R-Dynamic variant), Interactive Driver Display and Navigation Pro.

The Velar is fitted with the Jaguar Land Rover's Ingenium P250 powertrain.  It is the first of their two new petrol engines and this version in the Velar makes 250PS and 365Nm from 1,200rpm to 4,500rpm.  The engine is matched to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics. The Velar can 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds, yet return an impressive 7.6-litres/100km fuel consumption and 173g/km CO 2 emissions on the European combined cycle.

Being a Range Rover, it is a must for the Velar to have very good on-road, as well as class leading off-road manners. It is fitted with a torque on-demand all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, which is tuned to provide the optimum torque distribution to suit various road conditions. It is able the transition from 100 percent rear bias to fully locked in only 165 milliseconds. Transient torque delivery to the front axle can take as little as 100 milliseconds too. It makes the Velar's AWD system one of the most efficient and fastest around.

The Range Rover Velar is available in eight exterior colours i.e Fuji White, Yulong White, Corris Grey, Santorini Black, Kaikoura Stone, Firenze Red, Silicon Silver and Carpathian Grey; five interior colour options of Ebony/Ebony, Acorn, Vintage Tan/Ebony, Eclipse/Ebony and Light Oyster/Ebony. The Velar (P250) comes standard with 20- inch rims (pictured below) while the Velar R-Dynamic (P250) comes with 21-inch rims (like in the photo above).

The Malaysian specced Velar are fully imported (although I do wish that it were locally assembled so that my bank manager will allow me to have one). Designed and engineered at Jaguar Land Rover’s development centres in the UK, the Velar is manufactured at the company’s Solihull production facility.

Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia would like to state that all vehicles distributed by them are compatible with the Malaysian climate, environment, fuel quality and meet the Malaysian emission standard. All Land Rover vehicles distributed by authorised dealers also come with Land Rover Care programme which includes a five-year warranty, five years’ free service and three years’ roadside assistance.

For something which has its name derived from the latin word which means 'veil' or a cover, the Velar is a beauty. Whilst it was named after the original Range Rover prototype way back in the 1969, which was kept under a veil of secrecy, this new one must actually stand for a SUV veiled by a body styling of utmost beauty.

The 2018 Range Rover Velar’s  features in brief:

 Flush Deployable Door Handles
The flush deployable door handles are unique to the Velar in the Land Rover family (first used in their Jaguar counterparts). A futuristic feature, the door handles deploy when the vehicle is unlocked and the handles retract once the vehicle is locked. The door handles contribute to the low drag coefficient of only 0.32, making it the most aerodynamically-efficient Land Rover ever produced.

 Matrix LED Headlights
The most slender ever to appear on a Land Rover vehicle, these boldly designed Matrix LED headlights produce a quality of light close to daylight, giving excellent illumination and reducing eye fatigue.

 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display

The new Interactive Driver Display makes driving the Velar more interesting especially with four visual themes and a full-screen 3D navigation display.

 Interior Trim options
Fortified with , The Velar’s front seats balance its performance-oriented design (which Range Rover calls it the Sports-Command driving position) and support with opulent comfort. Meticulously weight-optimised and designed to liberate additional interior space and legroom, the seats have also been carefully sculpted for ease of entry and egress to and from the cabin.

Kvadrat highly durable wool-blend premium textile contrasted with Suede cloth is made optional for customers who prefer the option over the perforated grained leather for the P250 variant or perforated leather with suede cloth (depending on interior colour choice) that comes with the R-Dynamic variant. Kvadart is Europe’s leading manufacturer of high-quality design textiles. The use of Kvadart premium textile in the Velar is unique to luxury SUVs of this segment.

Safety Features
It has six airbags and a suite of technology advanced driver assistance systems including Head Up Display (Available only with the R-Dynamic), Navigation Pro System and Cruise Control Speed Limiter.
