Happenings: The Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia (LROM) Jamboree 2017

A grand Jamboree in conjunction with the Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia (LROM) 20th anniversary celebrations was held from last Saturday, the 29th of April 2017 to earlier today at the Petai Jungle Lodge in Karak, Selangor. The convoy was flagged off on saturday from LR Premium Sdn. Bhd, an independent Land Rover and Jaguar after-sales service centre in Petaling Jaya.

The event had attracted entries from Land Rover club members in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore where about 100 4x4 vehicles comprising mainly the LR Defender, Discovery, Range Rover and eleven Series 1 to 3 models had participated.

“We are very happy with the response and support from not only Land Rover clubs in Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia but also Landie fans from as far as Sulawesi, Riau and Jakarta." said LROM president Rate de Silva, who is also one of the founding members of the club.

“This year’s 20th anniversary celebrations are more family oriented and being held on a club member’s private property. We have planned six fun 4x4 obstacle courses with uneven runs for the participants around
the spacious five-acre grounds of the campsite in Karak,” he added.

According to the organisers, special LROM 20th anniversary merchandise ranging from shirts, t-shirts, car collection plates, caps, badges and stickers was   on sale during the 3-day event. A food sale specially prepared by pioneer LROM member Lawrence Cardosa will also be held at the campsite.  Also on sale will be hand-made soaps by a club member.

“Through this event, we hope to build greater interaction between all the Land Rover clubs in the region, and pave the way for future cross-border events such as jamborees, expeditions and gatherings,” according to Mr. de Silva.

LROM has organised various jamborees over the years. Its 10th anniversary celebration was held in Cameron Highlands in 2007. It also organized the highly successful and memorable Trans Kalimantan 1 and Trans Kalimantan 2 expeditions to Central, East and West Kalimantan, Indonesia, in 2012 and 2013 to commemorate the 15th anniversary celebration of LROM. This is a very active club!

The main sponsor’s of the LROM Jamboree 2017 are LR Premium Sdn Bhd, Toyo Tires, Toyo Lubricants and Hannibal roof tents which had sponsored 30 Roof boxes.

Some history and background on LROM
The Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia is the first and the only registered Land Rover Club in Malaysia and is reputed to be the most active outdoor 4x4 club in the country. It’s notable offroad expeditions include the Merdeka run, extreme adventure trips to Pasir Raja in Terengganu as well as other locations in Pahang and Johore, offroad driving courses as well as the much awaited annual Chinese New Year “Loh Sang” and Hari Raya “buka puasa” gatherings. LROM members also actively participate in the annual Mother’s Day charity event held at either an old folks home or orphanage.

“The idea for the formation of the Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia (LROM) was mooted when six founding members met in the garage of LROM club adviser Yamin Vong’s house in Taman Tun Dr Ismail 20
years ago,” said Mr. de Silva.

“That night, we ratified our commitment to start the Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia with a view of organizing trips where borders were closed to third country land transport and the overland passage seemed
a distant dream.”
