Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 officially launched - We try it out at the Sepang International Circuit

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 was officially launched earlier today at Sepang International Circuit. According to Goodyear, the new premium luxury sport tyre delivers 31% better wear performance and shorter braking distance on wet and dry roads.

We were one of the lucky people invited over to the Sepang International Circuit to experience Goodyear's latest ultra high performance tyre in 3 distinct tests (slalom, wet braking and track handling) that highlight our innovative Grip Booster and ActiveBraking technologies which give superior grip, handling and braking performance. We had a go in the Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 for the wet braking test, a F30 BMW 320i for the slalom and a F10 BMW 528i for the track handling test. There were also the Mercedes CLA250 and Audi A5 for the track session but we did not get to drive them.

Now whilst the session did not include any other comparison tyres, my 'scientific seat of my pants' test equipement (i.e, my behind) could tell that the tyre is a very predictable tyre in both dry and wet conditions. The wet braking session with the CLA 200 was pretty impressive. It highlights how far technology has taken car development as well as tyre development. The car tracked straight and was not unsettled under hard braking. Even at 100km/h things felt controllable.

The slalom in the 320i was also nice but on the half track of Sepang, it all came together whilst driving the 528i. The tyre had a lot of grip but it was predictable. As it was on a chassis as sweet as the 5 Series, all it could do was dance through the corners. High grip levels and a high level of predictability from the F1 Asymmetric 3 is what I can say.

Of course, this is in isolation with no other tyres tested or even the previous Asymmetric 2 tyre as an example of which we had the chance of trying out years ago during its launch in 2011. But even so, it was a satisfying try out of the new tyre as it actually worked well in many aspects.

Bits from the Goodyear Press Release and Website (Sizes and Price)

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tyre is Goodyear’s latest addition to its range of premium, luxury sport segment. Offering exceptional wet grip and braking performance, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tyre allows drivers to enjoy their journey in both dry and wet conditions.

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tyre has been specially designed to deliver on the key needs of consumers, with the most advanced technology and a key focus on safety and innovation. The new Grip Booster Technology has a grip booster compound with adhesive resin that ensures the tyre sticks to the road. It also has a stronger lightweight construction and is equipped with Active Braking Technology that increases the contact surface when braking, meaning shorter braking distances. Thanks to these innovations, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 offers improved grip, and therefore better handling and braking compared to its predecessor.

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 has been tested by independent organisation DEKRA which resulted in a strong performance on tread wear compared to other premium tyres on the market. In fact, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 is projected to offer up to 11,500km extra mileage (or +31%  better wear performance) versus the average of three leading competitors.

Additionally, the independent TUV Sud Benchmark Test, ordered by Goodyear show that the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 compared to the average of three leading competitors having a 2.6meter shorter braking distance (9% better performance) on wet roads, a 1.3 metre shorter braking distance on dry roads (4% better performance) and 4% better wet handling. The same test results also show a 10.9% better rolling resistance compared to the average of the three tested competitors which represents the second best rolling resistance performance of the tyre brands tested.

This ultimate luxury performance tire is available for 17 to 20 inch with up to 34 sizes available.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 retails from RM668 to RM1,820 inclusive of GST, depending on different sizes. Consumers can now purchase the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tyres at Goodyear Autocare and Servitekar outlets as well as authorised Goodyear dealers nationwide.
