A First Look at the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric - No Drive First Impressions on the new Electric SUV

I managed to get invited to the preview of the newly launched 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric. It was held last week and while I did not get a chance to drive the fully electrified SUV, I can tell you a bit on what the electric Kona is, its specification (how many variants and all) as well as some personal thoughts. This is the first all-electric vehicle under the Hyundai brand to make its debut in Malaysia. Prices at launch are RM149,888 (e-lite) RM169,888 (e-plus) and RM199,888 (e-max).

The new 2022 Kona Electric will be available in two different zero-emissions battery electric powertrains: a long-range Max version powered by a 64 kWh battery with a maximum range of 484km  via its 150Kw (204ps) motor and a 39.2 kWh battery basic version with a driving range of 305km (for the Lite and Plus variants) which has a 100kw 136ps motor, Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test (WLTP) with a single charge and both make 350m torque. It will come in 3 variants - the entry level Lite, the mid-level Plus and the top specced Max. The Max will be the one coming with the larger battery pack.

The Kona, unlike the IONIQ hatchback is not an outright hybrid or electric car design platform. It is unique in the way that there are many similarities with the regular Kona. The electric motor, transmission, convertor all sits where the internal combustion engine would sit. It looks like an engine with the usual plastic engine cover when you pop the bonnet to look at it. It is front wheel drive so everything about the drive train is up front. The battery pack sits under the car in an alloy box. You can actually see the box if you bend over and look beneath the car.(It's that silverish alloy you see beneath the black strip in the photo below). Oh, it also sits with a slightly lower ground clearance of 10mm because of this.

In the case of the battery pack, it does take a little bit of rear floor height. I could tell that the electric Kona has a slightly raised floor. However, no boot space seems to be taken  and storage size looks the same.

There is an added weight penalty compared to the standard Kona due to the battery packs (which are module based so you don't have to change the whole thing but only battery modules that require change). On the top specced Max, it is close to 400kg heavier than a regular petrol (or diesel) Kona. However, it makes up for it due to the centre of gravity being lower and the rear suspension set up is of a multi link design. No longer a beam type rear axle setup. So handling should be similar to the the regular Kona with a slightly  weight penalty felt when you are pushing it hard.

Although, this should be offset by the almost instantaneous push on an electric motor and 350m torque. This is why the top specced variant gets to 100kmh in under 8seconds. In terms of what I think, I imagine it to be a heavier, more powerful Kona, with tweaks to its suspension system to offset and balance out the weight gain. It should still be quite a nice drive like the regular one.

The Kona Electric we get is the facelifted variant. So the exterior gets some nice design updates where the Kona is less squarish up front with more flowing lines. Among the redesigned bits are new bumpers, lamps, wheel design and colours.. The signature claddings have been refined and now in body colour, thus emphasising the model’s width and stance. Low, U-shaped skid plate and new DRL design also improve the styling of the Kona. Externally, all variants look the same (even the alloy wheels are the same)with the only clues being the front radar in the Max and a more comprehensive sensor array at the top of the windscreen for both the Plus and the Max.

The interior features a progressive design with a new horizontal layout and new ambient lighting technology in the foot area. Ambient lighting illuminates the passenger and driver side footwell. All cars get the same infotainment system with Android and Apply carplay connectivity. The only real difference is that the Max and Plus gets a Heads Up Display on top of the meter cluster and both the front seats in the Max and Plus are electric adjustable ones. The Max gets ventilated and heated front seats as as extra.

So in short, you are paying extra for the performance and range in the max.

Overall, this is a Kona  facelift which does not have a petrol engine and of course missing a front grille air intake in the front. It is interesting to those that want to be the first adopters of the latest technology. It is also for those that want a very efficient short distance commuter vehicle. If you intend to drive to some place like Desaru from Kuala Lumpur, some planning is required. This is a car for any where within 200km. Well, you need another 200km to make it back home if you don't charge it up at your destination. It will also be quiet and you'd never ever need to end up at a fuel station again. Or maybe you may need to when these stations have areas for EV charging.

Both the Kona Electric 64 kWh and 39.2 kWh battery variants (electricity consumption: 15.4 kWh/100;CO 2 emissions: 0 g/km according to WLTP) feature an electric motor which delivers a maximum power of 204 PS (150 kW) and 395 Nm of immediate torque, accelerating the Kona Electric to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds – in ensuring that it is fun-to-drive with full power available from the first second.

Hyundai claims that charging the lithium-ion polymer battery from 10 to 80 per cent only takes about 47 minutes using a100kW direct current (DC) fast charger. The Kona Electric features an optional 11-kW three-phase on-board charger. This allows for significantly shorter charging times using public three-phase AC charging stations or with a private compatible wall box at home. Drivers also have the option of charging their car at a compatible regular household power socket using the ICCB-cable (in-cable control box).

But if the charging capability is actually fast only with the chargers mentioned above. If you charge via the ICCB (which sits in the boot floor), it will take a heck of a long time if you expect a full charge - 31 HOURS. Holy crap. But when you use any wall socket and everything has to be regulated, it is glacially slow. Which is why a home charging station is recommended. Well, the bigger the battery pack, the longer it needs to charge.

Eventually when Hyundai plants a few fast chargers near their dealerships and more EV charging stations which have the rapid chargers, it will get easier. But in the meantime, you buy the Kona Electric, you ought to get the wall mounted chargers. Or just ensure plugging it in overnight for adequate power for your local commutes.

Pricing is estimated to start under RM150,000 to about RM210,000 for the basic model with import and excise duty exemptions. This follows the Budget 2022 announcement last Friday on the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia. But do note that while you may save on any sort of sales taxes upon purchase, and a two year road tax exempt, these Kona Electric will be hit by a road tax of slightly over RM1,000 per annum for all variants.

This is quite a sum as the funny blokes that decided EV tax decided that since the electric motor that the Kona Electric uses the same parts number for both the larger more powerful motor, the powers that be decided that all variants get hit by the same road tax. So if you intend to run the Kona Electric for the long run. It could be a better thing if you just paid more for the extra oomph. That said, if you run the car for 10 years, the almost RM40-50K difference in price should be taken into account if you just run the car in the city.

The Kona Electric is an electric version of the Kona. It is the second electric car from Hyundai after the Ioniq. Sales started in Korea and Europe in 2018, with a market debut in the United States in 2019. Now, we get it here. One of the first fully electric cars that is relatively affordable here in Malaysia (relative to Malaysia, that is).

The Kona Electric will be available for booking with first deliveries scheduled for January 2022.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is Conducting a Safety Recall For Some Models from 2004 to 2016 Equipped with Takata Airbags

Takata Airbags have stuck again. This time with passenger car models sold by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia produced between 2004 ad 2016. It seems to be never ending with everything made by Takata during a certain period of time. It also shows human greed and the fact that beneath the polished surface of some large companies, there lies groups of unscrupulous management teams that care only about profits rather than the lives of the people using their products. Another one that comes to mind is Boeing with that 737 Max debacle that also cost many lives. Takata is no exception with deaths related to it involving other brands even here in Malaysia.

So if you have a Mercedes-Benz including the 169 (A-Class), 203, 204 (C-Class), X204 (GLK), 207 (E-Coupé/ Convertible), 212 (E-Class), 164 (ML- and GL-Class),251 (R-Class), 171 (SLK), 197 (SLS AMG) from production period 2004 - 2016, these are those mainly affected.

Hap Seng Star Launches the Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer - A 10 Seater MPV with a Premium Badge

Hap Seng Star Sdn Bhd, one of the largest authorised dealer of Mercedes-Benz in Malaysia have announced the availability of the new Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer at all Hap Seng Star dealerships in Malaysia. This is a 10 seater people carrier and the reason why you do not see this at other (non-Hap Seng Star) dealership is that the Vito, unlike the similar V-Class MPV is a vehicle under Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles and not a Mercedes-Benz Passenger Car division vehicle.

Epicor is Scuderia AlphaTauri's ERP Partner - Epicor logo to debut on Scuderia AlphaTauri cars at the Formula 1 Aramco United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas

-

Some motorsport/Formula 1 related news here. On October 20, 2021 Epicor, an industry-specific enterprise software to promote business growth, and Scuderia AlphaTauri had announced that Epicor has been named the Team’s Official ERP Partner. To those, like me even, who does not have a clue of what ERP here stands for it is not Electronic Road Pricing (which is what Singapore uses for their road congestion charges) but something called Enterprise Resource Planning. This is basically a system which is  used by a company to manage key parts of its business such as accounting, manufacturing, sales, and marketing. So here, Epicor's Kinetic cloud based software will be keeping track of a Formula1 team's daily business activities and their logo will make it debut on the Scuderia AlphaTauri car at tje Formula 1 Aramco United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas

The Very Luxurious All-New Land Rover Defender Finally Gets its Malaysian Debut

2021 Land Rover Defender launch Malaysia

Finally, the re-imagined new Land Rover Defender 110 has arrived in Malaysia. It has taken awhile, namely due to the pandemic dropping in and making life a little bit different from everyone but it is here. Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia launched the new Defender with two variants, namely the 2.0L 300PS Ingenium 4-cylinder Electronic Control, Direct-injection petrol engine and the 3.0L 400PS MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) 6-cylinder petrol engine.

The asking price of the 2.0L 300PS variant starts from RM798,800 while the 3.0L 400PS MHEV starts from RM998,800 (price is inclusive of 50% Penjana Sales Tax waiver, excluding Road Tax, Registration and Insurance). But if you add the optional roof rack or the optional snorkel ad utility box you see in the car below, its going to be a whole lot more. Yes, the price is nothing like the price of the old Defender 110 when it was offered here but this re-imagined Defender is nothing like the old namesake actually.

Site Update: I'm basically BACK! But the articles will be slow for the time being....

I'm back folks! News pieces will come soon as things are finally coming back to normal here in Malaysia as the country comes out of various forms of Covid-19 Pandemic lockdowns. Malaysia has over 95% vaccination rates for adults and this is why I have decided to start writing again. With economic activities opening up again, we can actually see, touch and feel the cars, trucks and whatever modes of transport. With experience, and only with actually experiencing these machines will writing about it make most sense for me to do.

Yes I'm Still Around, Just That All of These Lockdowns Have Curtailed My Mood ....

....of course it has curtailed my mood. I am one of those guys who enjoy proper experiences in my life. And since Malaysia is on another round of lockdowns, I have basically put many things on hold from my many dealings as well as this motoring blog. I am still around folks but until things get back to normal, I seem to be enjoying what retired people have been doing. Nothing whatsoever.

It is fun once I had got a few business matters settled as well as getting the recent Hari Raya festivities and the fasting month. Then came the total lockdown and out went my mood for most things too. But eventually I will start things off again.

But for now, just know that I am still around, but things are on a back burner for the moment.

I totally thrive for life experiences ad right now, you don't get many when you're in lockdown.

But do read the Porsche Taycan Experience article I just published down below....that electric vehicle is somehow still very Porsche in its execution.

At the Porsche Taycan Experience Malaysia 2021 - The Taycan Turbo S and Taycan 4S Driven

Recently, Sime Darby Auto Performance, the chaps who are the authorised Porsche distributors her in Malaysia held the Porsche Taycan Experience at the Sepang International Circuit. The event was held to showcase what the fully electric Porsche Taycan 4 door sports sedan/coupe can do. This is quite a good thing as there would still be some of us petrolheads over in this part of the world who still have second thoughts on fully electric vehicles, even more so an electric Porsche.

2021 BMW 330Li M Sport is Launched in Malaysia - Chauffer Driven 3 Series Anyone?

This is a bit late in terms of news but on the 9th of April 2021, BMW Malaysia launched the 2021 BMW 330Li M Sport in Malaysia. Somewhat of an enigma in terms of sports sedans, this is the first-ever long wheelbase variant of a compact premium sedan ever made by BMW and also the first ever compact premium sedan ever to be sold in the Malaysian market.  BMW Malaysia calls it a mid-sized premium sedan. But maybe this is due to its length, which is actually quite long - where the extra bit is similar to an average adult's outstretched thumb to their index finger. Or slightly larger than the height of a flagship smartphone. But in car terms, it is like buying a corner lot terrace house compared to an intermediate lot. Not a bungalow mind  you but you do get some extra here and there. in its mid-sized premium executive sedan portfolio for the Malaysian market.

Like Many Other Makes, Proton Cars Hit a Record High - Proton Sells 14,989 Units in March 2021

PROTON’s bullish start to 2021 continued in March as the company reported that they had not only achieved a new high point for the year but also achieved its best sales month since September 2013. Which seems like a loooong time ago especially in such pandemic ridden times. Proton sold  14,989 units (domestic + export) in March which is equivalent to a 26.2% increase over February and an estimated market share of 23.5%. So yes, the local brands are dominating the market but the thing is that every other established name out there seems to be also selling what they have due to the SST Rebate as well as increased demand for personal transport. No one wants to sit in public transport and get some virus it seems.

Perodua 1st Quarter Sales Numbers Show a 29% Increase Compared to 1st Quarter 2020 - Most Likely Causes, the Ativa SUV and the SST Rebate

Recently Perodua has reported that their1Q21 sales were up 29% as the Malaysian company sold an estimated 57,911 vehicles units with 4,345 of their new Ativa compact SUV delivered. This is also another small achievement as the 4,000 plus units were delivered in under 30 days (because the Ativa was launched in early March actually). One of the good things of having ample stock to be made available prior to the actual launch.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Sold a Record 4,156 Vehicles for the 1st Quarter of 2021 - 135% Increase Compared to the Same Period Last Year

MITSUBISHI MOTORS MALAYSIA (MMM), the official distributor of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in Malaysia, have reported historical high sales performance of 4,156 vehicles sold during the first quarter of 2021. This is a 135% increase compared to the same period for 2020. During the same period, Mitsubishi Motors is also the top three non-national brand for three consecutive months. Quite an achievement for a brand which is actually one of the smallest in terms of product line-up here in Malaysia actually. Bravo!

UMW Toyota Motor Reports Strong 1st Quarter Sales for 2021 & Hari Raya 2021 Promo News

UMW Toyota Motor, the sole importer, distributor and assembler of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, has reported growth in sales for the first quarter (Q1) of 2021. The total number of new Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the first three months of the year were more than 17,000 units with a market share of approximately 12.1%, an increase of 62% year-on-year compared to the sales volume for the same period in 2020. This is much like the news that other car makers are reporting even during these pandemic wrought times. Most likely due to the fact that people would rather drive than share public transport.

And the fact that there is still an ongoing SST rebate so the prices of cars are slightly cheaper.

1st of April 2021 Marked the Official Transfer of UD Trucks to Isuzu Motors

UD Trucks was officially acquired by Isuzu Motors from the Volvo Group on the 1st of April 2021. This move was part of the completion of the strategic alliance between the Volvo Group and Isuzu Motors. There has also been the first round of management changes up top with new members to the UD Trucks board of directors. This is not surprising as these things usually happen when overall control of a company changes hands.

Porsche Asia Pacific and Shell to Implement EV Charging Network Between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Penang

Porsche Asia Pacific and Shell have jointly announced the implementation of Southeast Asia’s first cross-border high performance charging (HPC) network with 12 charge points at six Shell stations strategically located along Malaysia’s North-South highway, offering EV drivers the possibility of smooth and convenient travel between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang. Six Shell stations in Malaysia will soon offer high performance direct-current chargers capable of charging EVs such as the all-electric Porsche Taycan at up to 180 kW. The new high-performance chargers redefine EV charging with an assurance of speed and range

The partnership essentially demonstrates the commitment between Porsche and Shell to drive the future of electric mobility in Southeast Asia by spearheading connectivity between the two countries, which handle one of the world’s busiest international land border crossings at the Sultan Iskandar Building and Woodlands Checkpoint. Of course, this will happen when borders are open again post pandemic lockdowns and all.

Do read on....and our thoughts about this are at the bottom of this article!
