The facelifted version of the ever popular current generation Perodua Myvi has been launched. In keeping with the usual tradition of Malaysians wanting to get their hands on the latest, and possibly greatest Myvi, 4303 units of the new car has already been booked with deliveries already started.
In a nutshell, you get a redesigned front grille and bumper up front, a slightly redesigned rear bumper and an improved Perodua Smart Drive Assist (PSDA) system for the higher end variants, which places more emphasis on pedestrian detection compared to previously. The most noticeable from all of the changes is of course the front end, which is what usually happens in a facelift. The Myvi now features basically a clean-up in terms of how the grille and the lights are shaped together with the bumper.
The grille now flows into the headlights and the 'X' in the whole front end looks more blended into. However, note that the downward kink you can see in the headlights seem more pronounced now compared to previously. I thought that wasn't there previously but when the character line which begins from the middle of the grille now flows into the lights, you do notice it clearer now. Overall, you still get that familiar third generation Myvi looks.
Perodua also says that the interior is also a little more refined. Slight cosmetic tweaks here and there but essentially the same with the major change being the PSDA active safety system which has been improved. Because the car is the most of the time the best selling car in Malaysia, Perodua has managed to keep prices similar even with the improved active safety suite. Nice work.
The biggest change to me personally is the change from the 4 speed torque convertor based automatic transmission to a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The dual mode CVT is light weight and compact sized, has been designed to provide powerful and smooth acceleration at low speeds and will make the vehicle quieter while increasing fuel efficiency. The New Myvi is claimed to have a 5%improvement or an additional 1km for every litre of fuel as well as a 20% improved acceleration as well as enabling Perodua cut its vehicle emissions and work their way towards being a carbon neutral organisation.
On a personal note, CVT seems to be the current trend in automatic transmissions. They are a lot more reliable than they once were and if you noticed, the whole Toyota group, of which Perodua come within the umbrella, now uses CVT for their models. CVTs are efficient and would actually help fuel economy aside from being refined enough for daily commutes. They have come a long way from the CVTs we used to hear of almost 2 decades ago.
The New Myvi, which cost RM50 million to develop, has advance technology, enhanced intelligent safety features, improved fuel economy, sporty new looks and a new colour.
“We are thankful to our customers and to all Malaysians for the support shown to both Perodua and the New Myvi,” said Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
He also added that Perodua is expecting to register 6,000 units monthly, which would enable the compact car company to maintain sales interest in the Myvi moving forward.
The New Myvi variants include the 1.5 litre AV (Advance Variant), 1.5 litre H variant, a 1.5 litre X variant and 1.3 litre G. The New Myvi is priced from RM45,700 to RM58,800 (Applicable for Peninsular Malaysia, without insurance and excluding Sales Tax.)
The launch of the New Myvi was within the same week as the launch of the third generation Myvi on 16 November 2017. The Myvi, which was first introduced in May 2005 have sold some 1.3 million units so far and of that number, the third generation Myvi sold 277,329 units.
The PSDA has four features; the Advance Safety Assist (ASA); Driving Assist; Parking Assist; and Head Lamp Assist. The full suite of these features can be found in the AV variant, which qualify it as a car with Autonomous Level 2 technology. (See attached brochure for specifications for all variants).According to Perodua, this is the first time in Malaysian history that a car company is offering a car with Autonomous Level 2 technology priced under RM60,000.
The New Myvi also features new colour, Cranberry Red, which is only available for the AV. Other colours include Ivory White, Glittering Silver, Lava Red (not available for the AV), Granite Grey, and Electric Blue. The Perodua Myvi also comes with a 5 star ASEAN NCAP rating.
Perodua's Outlook in the Post-Pandemic and Chip Shortage Era
On the overall industry outlook this year, Dato’ Zainal said the challenges brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic is still present and is impacting vehicle production with intermittent stops to halt the spread of the virus.
The semiconductor chip supply shortage is still an issue for manufacturers worldwide as chip makers struggle to keep up with demand, he added.
“These challenges have taken a toll on our production volume, while we are unable to reveal how much of an impact at the moment, suffice to say that Perodua will not be able to meet its 214,000 vehicles sales target set earlier,” Dato’ Zainal said.
“That being said, demand for our vehicles are still healthy with a sizeable order book and well as an expected sustained demand moving forward due to the continued sales tax exemption. Because of this we expect both production and sales to have a strong recovery next year,” Dato’ Zainal explained.
EZ MOBi Service
Meanwhile, Perodua is also introducing another value-added all-inclusive vehicle subscription service called Perodua EZ MOBi whereby this service will assist companies in managing their vehicle fleet from the time of procurement, servicing and fleet replacement.
“In essence, EZ MOBi represents Perodua’s value contribution towards its customers’ growing mobility needs. The overall package includes vehicle registration, insurance renewal, servicing cost, part replacement cost, courtesy car, vehicle disposal and replacement under one subscription plan,” Dato’ Zainal said.
“The value offering of this service is that Perodua EZ MOBi provides end-to-end convenience to our customers as various packages are available to fit each client’s mobility needs,” Dato’ Zainal added.
One of Perodua EZ MOBi’s uniqueness is that its subscription plan factors in all costs of owning and operating vehicles except fuel usage.
For now, this new service is currently available in the Klang Valley and only for business entities and government agencies. Please visit Perodua’s website at www.perodua.com.my for more information on the New Myvi’s features.
