What this 2027 Proton S70 non-turbo is basically the iGT 1.5liter engine you see in the latest, and greatest Proton Saga. The top spec Saga gets this 1.5liter normally aspirated engine and a CVT gearbox powering its front wheels. This engine is the same Geely based turbocharged 1.5liter engine you see in all of Proton's cars like the X50, X70, S70 etc. but is has its turbocharger removed. What this does is allow for a more basic engine, with more basic performance figures for those that want what is essentially TRANSPORT. This will not kill contis on a daily basis but transport you and your family in relative comfort.
Now, no real drawbacks can be seen with the exception of the CVT transmission that will be used. It will be tuned for fuel efficiency, so expect it to hold its engine revs as speeds climb. This will be like the Proton SAGA Premium spec with the CVT gearbox. But due to this, expect decent fuel consumption from its petrol drivetrain.
And from the press release, Proton tells us that both new non turbocharged variants feature wireless Android AutoTM and pple CarPlay®, while also offering features including Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold, all windows Auto Up/Down with Anti Trap, remote engine start and five USB ports, with equipment varying by variant.
Safety is supported by six airbags, front and rear parking sensors and a suite of driver-assistance through Rear Side Radar System that consist of Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Door Opening Warning and Rear Collision Warning. On top of that, customers can also benefit from Rear Seat Reminder & Reverse Camera as standard. The equipment and safety features are as good as the turbocharged variants. They seem to look the same too.
So if you just want transport with good equipment specifications, and safety features and do not mind that dip in performance- Heck, that so called 'dip' in performance only makes it in the same class range as a Toyota Vios 1.5G or a Honda City 1.5 which are both normally aspirated, or non turbocharged 1.5liter petrol engines. Both have CVT gearboxes, and both cost RM90,000 over. So you can be getting these sort of cars for at least RM20,000 cheaper (before the brands throw discounts of rebates).
