Yestarday evening, the 22nd September, PROTON launched the 2026 PROTON S70 Lite and Prime variants. These 1.5liter normally aspirated variants (instead of being turbocharged from its launch) are priced from RM56,800. The new variants bring a cheaper, more affordable option, but without eschewing equipment levels. Those that want comfort, specifications and wish to just use the S70 as transport will love it.
The new 2026 onwards S70 non-turbo variants will still come with 10 class-leading features as well as keeping its space, comfort, connectivity and safety to more Malaysians. In other words, you are still getting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in this more affordable model. So you can sit nicely in this S70 and still tinker around with the full suite infotainment system. And you have lotsa airbags still.
Technically, you could say that you are getting Toyota Vios or Honda City levels of performance (as both are sold here in normally aspirated forms - if you don't count their higher specced Hybrid forms) at way under the two car's asking prices. The extra bonus is that the S70's size - it is larger in terms of its dimensions, slightly wider and longer, and that could matter to some customers.
The introduction of the S70 Lite and Prime builds on the strong sales performance of the PROTON S70. Which has benefited from its recent facelift. The model has recorded average monthly sales of more than 2,500 units in 2026. As for the two new non-turbocharged variants, PROTON states that since order books opened on 7 September 2026, the two new variants have received more than 10,000 bookings in just two weeks, reflecting encouraging demand for the expanded S70 range.
The S70 Lite and Prime variants are powered by a 1.5-litre i-GT four-cylinder engine rated at 120 PS and 150 Nm of torque and mated to a CVT transmission powering the front wheels. This is basically the same engine and transmission you get in the top specced Proton Saga launched recently. Power levels are about right for a 1.5liter normally asipirated engine these days.

Personally, we like these two basic variants, it allows more Malaysians to get their hands on a larger sized sedan on a budget. Not everyone needs to bomb around over the speed limits on the highways. While I like performance cars, we have to be realistic to a majority of the customers. Also, the S70 turbo likes lifting up its front end on full bore acceleration (yes, I've tried the 'Conti Killer'), and I feel that the more sedate drivetrain may suit the S70 more.than the performance variant.

Both variants are powered by a naturally aspirated i-GT 1.5-litre engine paired with a CVT with a torque converter, delivering a smooth and comfortable drive. The engine’s characteristics support good NVH performance, creating a calm and comfortable cabin environment. The smooth and relaxed driving experience is well suited to urban journeys, family use and longer drives.
The variants retain PROTON Ride & Handling and three selectable drive modes, allowing drivers to adapt to different driving conditions and preferences. They complement the existing S70 range, with equipment differentiated by variant to suit different customer needs.
