OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia had earlier today launched the 2026 onwards JAECOO J5 EV compact SUV here in Subang Jaya, Selangor. This is the brand's first fully electric vehicle for the Malaysian market and it is assembled locally in Malaysia. It is positioned as a premium B-segment (sub compact) electric SUV, and features snappy electric performance, intelligent technology, practical everyday usability and lifestyle-oriented features in a boxy, modern SUV shape.
More than simply introducing another electric model to the market, the J5 EV reflects JAECOO’s commitment to making electric mobility more accessible and practical for Malaysian drivers, supported by a broader ownership ecosystem. There will only be one variant offered with its price of RM118,800 on the road before insurance. There is quite a good early bird package of which details are down below towards the end of this article.
Head of OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia, Chris Tan said, “The J5 EV marks an important chapter for OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia as we take our first step into fully electric mobility. The J5 EV is developed as a lifestyle SUV that brings together performance, technology, practicality and the freedom to explore. As we enter this next phase of electrification, local assembly of the J5 EV further reflects our long-term commitment to building a stronger foundation for electric mobility in Malaysia.”
The 2026 onwards JAECOO J5 EV SUV
The JAECOO J5 EV while being similiar to the regular fossil fueled variant, brings a clean and distinctive design to the electric SUV segment. It features the same boxy Land Rover-ish proportions complemented by an Active Grille Shutter that supports aerodynamic efficiency (which is the msin difference between its petrol powered sibling- a cleaner somewhat grille-less front end)) and 18-inch aerodynamic wheels that contribute to both its design and performance.
The compact sized SUV also offers 174 mm of ground clearance and a 450 mm wading depth, giving drivers greater confidence when navigating different road conditions.
As for the interior, it is designed to feel open and spacious, with a 1.45-metre panoramic glass roof bringing more natural light into the interior. Practicality is further supported by a 35-litre front trunk, 480 litres of rear boot space and up to 1,284litres of cargo capacity with the rear seats folded.
The J5 EV also features a 540° HD Surround View system, giving drivers a clearer view of the vehicle;s surroundings when manoeuvring and parking.
Performance, range and charging
The J5 EV has a fully electric drive system producing 155 kW of maximum power and 288 Nm of maximum torque, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, which is pretty good for an entry level compact EV. Its 58.9 kWh LFP battery supplied by CATL ensures a range of up to 461 km under the NEDC cycle, giving the J5 EV the flexibility to handle both daily driving and longer journeys. For us here, this is very good for its battery size and uts compact dimensions, both in range and achievable performance.
The J5 EV supports 11 kW AC charging, with charging from 10% to 100% taking
approximately seven hours.
Technology inside the J5 EV
