Jaguar Land Rover (Malaysia), or JLRM in short, has announced the launch of the new Land Rover Discovery. The fifth generation Discovery, or Disco as it is also called by its adoring fans was first launched way back in September of 2016. Sales for the full sized, three row, seven seater SUV started in February of last year and it is now finally on sale here in Malaysia after its local preview at the Malaysia Autoshow at the end of 2017 (photo below).
The new Land Rover Discovery is fully imported and is priced at RM729,800, inclusive of 6% GST but excluding road tax, registration and insurance. It comes with 5 years warranty and free service as well as 3 years of complimentary roadside assist. JLRM has also informed that the first 5 customers to purchase the new Discovery will be given a RM5,000 accessory voucher for them to kit out their new Disco. The genuine Land Rover accessories are also covered by a 12-month warranty for peace of mind and any accessory fitted within one month or 1,600km (whichever comes first) of the handover of the new Discovery will be covered by the vehicle warranty.
As part of the official launch programme, JLRM will be organizing a ‘Discovery Day’ on January 13 and 14, 2018 at Sime Darby Auto Connexion Petaling Jaya and SISMA Auto Glenmarie and also at SISMA Auto Penang on January 20 and 21, 2018. HOWEVER, do note that the event is by invitation only. Interested customers must call the respective showrooms to register their interest and their names before they can attend the events.
Only one engine variant is brought in at the moment. A 3.0 V6 turbodiesel. It is powered by a 258PS 600Nm torque 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, badged Td6, the single-turbo engine features low-pressure exhaust recirculation, a two-stage oil pump and revised fuel-injector nozzle for improved responses, refinement and efficiency. The 258PS engine delivers stronger performance than before and the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint takes only 8.1 seconds – a reduction of 1.3 seconds over the previous similar engined Discovery.
The transmission is a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox which sends the power to all the wheels. Like most current Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, the gearbox is controlled using the rotary gearshift controller that rises from the center console or by using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for more control when doing technical off-road maneuvers or driving up or down a windy road. It is also equipped with a two-speed transfer box, providing selectable high and low range gears for optimum on-road and off-road performance. The intelligent permanent all-wheel drive system provides a standard 50/50 torque split between front and rear wheels. There is the two-speed fully synchronised ‘shift on the move’ system allows the driver to swap between high and low ratios without having to stop the vehicle, at speeds of up to 60km/h.
There is an available four-corner air suspension system in the new Discovery which improves the ride quality when driving on-road also provides greater capability when off-roading.
Land Rover’s innovative aluminium (85% aluminium) full-sized SUV platform is used for the new Discovery. It is 480kg lighter than the fourth generation model and this weight reducing program has contributed to lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy, as well as enhancing its road holding and off road manners.
In terms of overall design, the fifth generation Discovery incorporates a lot of styling cues from Land Rovers of the past and puts it all in a contemporary design that would appeal to those that yearn for such a lifestyle. One which the British brand is renowned for. The front end of the new Discovery is more sculpted with more jewelry-like headlamps and a more reclined windscreen rake.
It is more modern in styling and it does make the SUV less traditionally chunky than before but it still looks very Land Rover from all angles. At the rear, JLR have given the LED rear lamps a horizontal emphasis, while the new one-piece tailgate delivers a more dynamic rear design with a nice quirk - the offset number plate which you can clearly see in the photo above. But it is a successful design in terms of overall execution as the Discovery looks more youthful yet you know that it still feels like it can take on any road or off-road condition you throw at it. It is a Land Rover. It should, or must be able to do off-roading with relative ease.
The Discovery measures 4,970mm long, 2,220mm wide (mirrors out) and 1,846mm tall, has three rows of seats and can seat seven people (and a dog or two). It also keeps the trademark stadium seating as well as the distinctive stepped roof which ensures all passengers enjoy great forward visibility and long-haul comfort. JLR has also kept with its Command Driving Position philosophy for visibility
Apart from that, it is also equipped with InControl Touch Pro infotainment unit, which provides greater connectivity than ever before including access to a range of apps, satellite navigation as well as vehicle controls through the updated 10-inch high-resolution touchscreen display.
Other equipment includes the Powered Inner Tailgate. This incorporates an additional fold-down section that deploys when the tailgate is opened. A button inside the load area can then be used to lower the Powered Inner Tailgate section. The deployed 285mm long tailgate serves as impromptu event seating and is able to support a maximum load of 300kg, making it the perfect place to enjoy a tailgate picnic or to change out of muddy boots – all under the shelter of the tailgate.
