The Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival held in conjunction with the Vios Challenge will be in Medini City, Iskandar Puteri, Johor this coming 19th and 20th of January. The event is part of the one make Toyota Vios Challenge where the racing is filled with familiar faces from the Malaysian racing scene, amateurs and also celebrities. All drive a track prepared Toyota Vios sedan around various locales throughout Malaysia.
This time around, venue partner, Medini City has provided a new street circuit which would be unfamiliar to all of the competitors. Add the fact that each Toyota Vios race car is prepared equally (only minimal changes can be made by the teams such as suspension and tyre pressure), it is actually the driver which plays a large part where their skill, bravado and basically how big their testicles are come into play. Maybe luck has a big part too. What ever the case is, this race formula has been reported to be a success as witnessed in the two opening rounds held in BatuKawan, Penang and MAEPS, Serdang where there were plenty of drama during the races.
“When we created the Vios Challenge, we expected to develop the level of competition gradually but as we’ve witnessed from the very first race in BatuKawan, spectators and drivers have been treated to a very high level of competition in all the three classes of the Vios Challenge. It has been spectacular to say the least and it is a must-attend for every motor racing fan who wants to watch high quality motor racing,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor, Mr. Ravindran K.
The early races in the Promotional Class were dominated by beatboxer celebrity Shawn Lee, but a mistake in the last race in MAEPS Serdang cost him a bit as he spun out on the opening lap. Shukri Yahaya capitalised on the error and took the chequered flag that day. With that, Shukri is now a mere five points behind Shawn while another chap named Danny Koo (Ed - I don't know what is he famous for actually, Shukri too. I know I could Google them but...) is currently in third in that category. Fourth is Diana Danielle (Ed. - This person I know. She is an actress that does Malay dramas which I don't watch), who actually drives quite well as she has been on the podium in the Vios Challenge before.
As for the Sporting Class, where amateurs who actually paid money to race, has some interesting competition. Brendan Anthony of Dream Chaser team was on pole and also won. In the second heat, it was Patrick Tam of Team Nanoplus who turned the tables on the youngster by taking his first win in the series. However, with consistent finishes in BatuKawan and MAEPS Serdang, Brandon Lim of Tedco Racing now leads the series with 57 points and holds a ten-point advantage over current second placed Ken Foo who struggled to find pace in KL. Patrick Tam is a further point behind with Kenneth Koh, Brendan Anthony and Jackson Tan all within striking distance should any of the top runners falter.
In the premier Super Sporting Class where the seasoned veterans of the local racing scene sit, the field is even tighter with seven drivers separated by a 20-point gap. TengkuDjan still enjoys the lead in the championship despite claiming just nine points from the Serdang race but the pack made up of Mitchell Cheah, William Ho, Mark Darwin, Shafiq Ali, Boy Wong and Ser Ming Hui have a mathematical chance of heading the pack if they do extremely well and luck favours them.
Entrance to the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival is FREE and activities begin from 9.00 am daily stretching till 6.30pm. There are lots of Toyota things to do and see. Food, fun and games are there for the family too so they don't get bored if you bring them along.
