BMW Group Malaysia Sold 12,680 Units of BMW vehicles, MINI and BMW Motorrad In 2017 - Another Super Successful Year For the Premium Brand

BMW Group Malaysia has announced that the premium automotive manufacturer sold 12,680 units of BMW, MINI and BMW motorrad (motorcycle) vehicles in 2017. This was a jump of 16% compared to 2016 where the group sold 10,906 units in total. From 12,680 units of 2017, BMW cars  were the largest earners for the group with  10,618 units, followed by 1,010 MINI vehicles and this was followed by 1,052 units of its BMW motorcycles. 2017 was a good year for BMW here in Malaysia.

Of course, the brand also hit record numbers globally with a total 2,463,526 units delivered. This is the seventh record year for them in terms of global sales figures. The BMW brand saw a 4.2% increase in 2017. BMW delivered 2,088,283 vehicles from the figure mentioned above, while the MINI brand also grew 3.2% over the previous year with 371,881 deliveries. Sales across the BMW Motorrad range also increased by 13.2% with a total of 164,153 units delivered globally.

In Malaysia, The BMW brand grew by 18% in 2017, with BMW vehicles delivering a total of 10,618 BMW vehicles from 9,000 vehicles in 2016. In terms of sales by the models, the BMW 3 Series lead the way with 3,564 units delivered - 2,408 of which are units of the BMW 330e and BMW 330e M Sport. The hybrid  BMW X5 xDrive40e is also a key contributor of the brand’s performance, with over 3,000 units sold last year. The BMW 740Le xDrive had over 400 units delivered. BMW is becoming quite a leader in terms of hybrid vehicle sales here in Malaysia.

BMW Group Malaysia looks forward to better things with 2018. This year, exports of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series will begin. First to Vietnam and then the Philippines. The BMW Assembly Plant in Kulim increased its local assembly capabilities to over 10,000 vehicles in 2017 with a total investment of over RM10million. This is in line with the Malaysian government's plan to make Malaysia an export hub, especially in the Energy Efficient Vehicle sector. With the production incentives, it actually makes business sense for BMW to assemble and then export their cars to capitalise on the EEV incentives by producing hybrid cars (especially) here. It is good to hear that multi-national companies are using Malaysian as a point for exports in the South-East Asian region.

Of course, the sales performance of BMW here in Malaysia is also a key factor for the company in setting up shop. The dealer network and customer experience is also important. So adding to the company’s commitment to deliver greater ownership experience for its customers, BMW Group Malaysia had also introduced many customer-centric services such as the Full Circle Programme by BMW Credit Malaysia, and the Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline Program for BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad vehicles.

These new services were introduced last year on top of its existing premium offerings such as the BMW 5 Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty and Free Service Program, the BMW Tyre Warranty Program, and the MINI 4 Year Unlimited Mileage and Free Service Warranty program. It is no surprise that the BMW brand is growing. Steadily and quietly from the looks of it (compared to its other German rival).

Last year also marked another milestone in terms of the company's investments here in Malaysia. They also officially opened its newest Regional Parts Distribution Centre facilities at the Free Trade Zone of the Senai International Airport of Iskandar Malaysia. The new regional facility, which is built on an investment of over RM 130million, is one of the largest of its kind in the Asia Pacific region and supports over 22 countries in the region. This Parts centre as well as the local assembly of BMW cars for (the eventual) export throughout the region shows the investment and commitment of the company to Malaysia.
