Proton Has Launched The X70 ME (MERDEKA EDITION) - Limited to 62 Units in Conjunction With Malaysia's 62nd Independence Day

While I was busy trying out the newly facelifted Proton Saga over in Ipoh (stay tuned for that video review folks!), the folks at Proton announced the launch of the limited run Proton X70 ME, or Merdeka Edition. This variant of the very popular SUV is limited to only 62 units and was introduced in conjunction with Malaysia's 62nd Independence Day. 62 units for 62 years of independence. It is priced at RM126,100 and is only available in Snow White and Flame Red colours.

This is Proton's first limited run production SUV and they unveiled the Proton X70 Merdeka Edition (ME) at its dealer, Ming Heng Motor’s 4S showroom in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. They are also quite confident that all the units of the X70 ME will be sold out come 31st August, which is the actual date of independence.

The 2019 Proton X70 ME is essentially the Premium variant of the SUV but it features some extras. There is an exterior styling package and some additional interior trim. For the exterior, a signature paint colour called Quartz Black has been added to the roof and A-pillar. Proton has also added door visors all-round, a rear bumper scuff plate and it rounds the exterior trimming with  a customised Merdeka Edition emblem  mounted on the tailgate.

As for the interior, Proton has added new floor mats, a trunk mat and a special numbered Merdeka Edition emblem. Being the Premium specced X70, the X70 ME features the Nappa leather seats and glass roof along with the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). All features already found in the X70 Premium.

“The Proton X70 Merdeka Edition was born out of PROTON’s desire to celebrate Malaysia’s Merdeka anniversary month. We are extremely thankful for the support Malaysian car buyers and the Malaysian government has shown to PROTON, so this is the Company’s way of creating a special version of the Proton X70 as a small gesture of thanks to all Malaysians,” said Dr Li Chunrong, CEO of PROTON at the unveiling ceremony.
