No-Single-Use-Plastic Campaign funded by “Master Sustainability by Scania” Started At The SK Dato Keramat School in Penang

On the 31st of July 2019, Scania Malaysia launched their newest social initiative, the No-Single-Use-Plastic Campaign funded by “Master Sustainability by Scania.”. There, they distributed reusable lunch boxes and water bottles to the students, teachers and staff of Sekolah Kebangsaan Dato’ Keramat, Penang which was the venue of this event. The main intention of this campaign is to prevent use of disposable plastics among the school children as well as creating awareness of using sustainable means of living.

The “Master Sustainability by Scania” fund was launched last year with the goal to motivate and assist local primary schools to start up curricular and extra-curricular activities or projects that focus on sustainability. We had previously written of this and now, Sekolah Kebangsaan Dato’ Keramat is the second recipient of the Fund. This was after Sekolah Kebangsaan Perdana Jaya, Subang Jaya which had received funds from this initiative for its urban farming and environmental awareness project launched in November last year.

I had previously written that Scania has essentially made invest towards out children and our nation by coming up with this programme.

At the launch, Scania Southeast Asia’s Managing Director Marie Sjödin Enström said, “Reducing the usage of single use plastic is important as we have seen the adverse effects these plastics have on our ecosystem. Therefore, we are very pleased to support Sekolah Kebangsaan Dato’ Keramat’s campaign especially echoing the Penang state government’s move to ban single use plastic in the state,”

“Doing the right things and doing things right have always been two key aspects for Scania. Sustainability has always been at the heart of Scania’s operations and it is our responsibility to nurture the young generation so they can grow to become future sustainability leaders,” added Marie.

Sekolah Kebangsaan Dato’ Keramat’s Headmaster, Mohd Kamal Mohd Nor, said that he and the school were appreciative that Scania Malaysia agreed to choose their project and support the school’s “no-single-use-plastic” initiative. Parents too can play an important role in ensuring that the use of these lunch boxes are optimised by filling them up with prepared home meals or snacks rather than use disposable plastic containers that may end up at landfills or littered around anywhere else. At the very most, it is just washing the containers after each use before being re-used again for the sake of the environment.

“It might seem like a small action but the impact if followed through consistently will be big and will shape the right mind set and behaviour starting at an early age. We believe that with the availability of the reusable lunch boxes and water bottles, the students can reduce the use of single use plastic whilst living a more sustainable lifestyle,” said Mohd Kamal during the launch event.

The “Master Sustainability By Scania” Fund by Scania Malaysia is sustained by a portion of the company’s vehicle sales revenue. It is an ongoing programme so schools throughout Malaysia are invited to submit their sustainability project and / or activity ideas by emailing Scania Malaysia at smyenquries@scania.com.

So if you are reading this, do spread the word. Help spread the word on sustainability in all aspects.
