Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has recently introduced a new aftersales service for maintaining the engine. The new service is the Walnut Blasting Decarbonizer and it is available at all authorized dealerships. The new, essentially carbon cleaning service of a Volkswagen cylinder head without any disassembly is part of the Volkswagen Cares initiative, and this service is available from as low as RM515 per vehicle.
VPCM now recommends this decarboniser service as a preventive measure every 45,000km. The Volkswagen Walnut Blasting Decarbonizer uses walnut shells to gently remove carbon build-up in the engine for a cleaner and smoother drive. This method of carbon cleaning is recognized and approved by Volkswagen AG (the people from Germany themselves) and this method is economical, efficient and non-corrosive, without the use of harmful chemicals. Carbon clean could protect a car's engine, especially those who run with high pressure direct injection, which engines like the Volkswagen TSI are.
All cars with a direct injection engine that runs on gasoline, aka petrol, will produce carbon deposits as a by-product of the combustion process which can accumulate on the valves. The deposits which stick to the valves can lead to sluggish engine performance. This is aggravated by stop-and-go city driving which does not allow the engine to 'clean' itself. By cleaning itself, it is actually good for the engine to be taken to its redline occasionally so that the engine gets to push out the deposits by sheer force of combustion.
However, usually most commuters do not have the time or luxury to do so and over the years, this carbon causes a build-up of black soot that hardens around the intake valves. The build-up causes restrictions in the engine, resulting in loss of power, overheating and higher fuel consumption. Aside from the Electronic Power Control and Engine Warning lights, other symptoms are rough idling, poor acceleration, engine misfire and knocking sounds. While direct injection engines usually make more power than regular ones, the direct injection means that there is actually less lubrication to the valves as everything is just deposited into the combustion chamber and no fuel is actually passing through the valves like normal. So carbon cleaning an engine actually helps a lot in the overall engine mainenance process.
Erik Winter, Managing Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia said that this service addition is part of the ongoing effort under the Volkswagen Cares promise. “It goes without saying that our customers are our top priority – and we are continuously looking for ways to improve our services and offerings to our customers under the VW Cares brand promise to provide value-added and quality services. This is one of many to come.“
Volkswagen owners are advised to decarbonize their engines every 45,000km as a preventive measure and can seek further assistance from all authorized dealerships. I know there would be some who will be complaining that this is another way for manufacturers to make money from their customers, but in this case, if it can keep that high performance direct injection engine healthier for a little bit longer...what is RM515 over an overhaul bill?
