Bermaz Launches the Refreshed 2018 Mazda CX-3 in Malaysia

Bermaz Motor, the official distributor of Mazda here in Malaysia has officially launched the refreshed and basically new 2018 Mazda CX-3. The CX-3 was first introduced in here in 2015 and has been slightly reworked, retuned and refined by Mazda to deliver what they would say as having greater elegance, better driving performance and efficiency.

Exterior-wise, the 2018 Mazda CX-3 has been updated with some slight exterior changes. If you are not paying attention you might just not notice it unless you are a real fan of the brand. Personally, I also think that this is because the compact crossover already looked extremely good out of the box when it was first revealed back in November 2014. It still is very fresh. Anyway, changes to the outside include a new front grille design with double chrome slats, redesigned rear tail lights and a new wheel design.

The 2018 Mazda CX-3 gets tweaked a fair bit more internally. Equipment levels are up as it receives an updated dashboard with new red accent on the air conditioner louvers. There is the adoption of electronic parking brake which allows for a new more open looking centre console, armrest and it also allows for more storage space as the lack of a handbrake lever frees up space in the middle. Other notable updates include redesigned front seats for greater comfort and support, and a new rear seat centre armrest with built-in cup holders.

Aside from the cosmetic and tech upgrades for the occupants, the 2018 Mazda CX-3 has improved NVH which allow for better sound insulation. There are thicker door panels, outer glass and headliner door seals which Mazda says has made the CX-3 have a more refined and quieter cabin. In terms of vehicle dynamics, or ride and handling, Mazda's engineers have retuned the suspension for a smoother ride.; They have also reworked the power steering and also tweaked the chassis for a better 'Jinba-Ittai' (aka fun) driving experience.

In terms of its engine and drivetrain, the 2018 CX-3 for Malaysia is equipped with the Mazda SKYACTIV-G direct injection normally aspirated 2.0L engine and is coupled to a SKYACTIV-DRIVE six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift and sport modes. The engine makes a decent 154hp and 206Nm with a claimed maximum speed of 196kmh. It also features Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control (GVC) technology for more sure footed handling.

The crossover also has the latest Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE dynamic safety features equipped are Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). BSM helps detect and alert drivers to the presence of vehicles in the blind spot area on either side by displaying an icon in the respective door wing mirrors. If the driver indicates to change lanes with a vehicle in the blind spot, the icon flashes and a warning beep is sounded. RCTA alerts the driver when it detects vehicles approaching from either side during reversing operations.

The Mazda CX-3 has won many awards internationally including the 2015 Red Dot Design Awards, the 2016 and 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the 2016 World Car Design of the Year Finalist, the 2016 CarSifu Best SUV (Crossover Compact), the 2016 ASEAN Crossover Car of the Year, the 2017 DSF.my/Allianz Vehicle Design of the Year, and most recently the 2018 Cars of Malaysia Top Crossovers.

Overall this compact crossover offers a lot in terms of styling and equipment levels. Personally we think that Mazda has come out with great looking vehicles of recent times and are actually very impressive in terms of technical specifications. Also note that the cars also give extremely good real world fuel economy as if you just try driving economically, you can achieve the claimed fuel consumption figures easily. Not many cars can give you that pleasure...and give you driving pleasure too.

The 2018 Mazda CX-3 CBU is available in 6 colour choices: Soul Red Crystal, Ceramic Metallic, Machine Grey, Deep Crystal Blue, Jet Black Mica and Snowflake White Pearl. Selling price is RM 123,405.00 (OTR without insurance).
