BMW Malaysia X FLYPROJECT Unveil the BMW i8 to the Malaysian Public At the Largest Outdoor Flycycle Class

Recently, BMW Malaysia and FLYPROJECT organised the country’s largest outdoor FlyCycle class at The Square, Publika and unveiled the new 2018 BMW i8 there. This is some form of mass exercise / workout session organised by BMW Malaysian and FLYPROJECT as part of the premium automaker’s commitment to create awareness on Visionary Mobility and Electro Mobility.

This was also an event where BMW Malaysia had chosen to introduce the new 2018 BMW i8 to the Malaysian public (it was unveiled to the Malaysia motoring media sometime earlier). This is certainly one of those methods of creating brand awareness via a slightly different route - here we have BMW's mobility crossed with flycycling.

The unique fitness event which included FlyCycle and FlyFight classes drew a turnout of close to 100 participants, with slots all snatched up by members of the public within 12 hours of registration. The FlyCycle class was led by FLYPROJECT star trainers Syed Harris Umar, Isabelle Wong and Swarna Naidu. Lifestyle personalities like Nurulain Edruce, Chloe Chen, Yvonne Lee, Karen Kho, Megan Tan, Michelle Lee, Grace Choong, Talitha Tan, Nelissa Nezam and Loreal Mok also participated. (Ed. - none of these people I know because the workout I know is shifting gears via a manual transmission or pedal shifters)

Mr. Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director and CEO of BMW Group Malaysia said, “Being the pioneers of Electro Mobility in the country and having the largest fleet of premium vehicles capable of electric driving pleasure, it is our responsibility to drive awareness on the possibilities of the technology and the mobility of the future. Part of the Born Electric campaign, this one-of-a-kind collaboration has allowed us to take another step forward in empowering visionary and sustainable electro-mobility for Malaysians. It was also the perfect setting to introduce the New BMW i8 Coupé to the public.”

The FlyCycle class kicked off with participants pedaling  on their spinning bikes and during the workout session, the projection screen lit up and raised to reveal the New BMW i8 Coupé to the public for the very first time. Quite a different way of unveiling a RM1.3 million sports car to the public. Should be very memorable to those that attended.

The New BMW i8 Coupé Product Brief by BMW Malaysia:

The New BMW i8 Coupé is yet another iconic BMW i model that will redefine Plug-
in Hybrid vehicle technology. The New Generation of a Vision features a brand new
LifeDrive vehicle architecture which will represent all BMW i models to come.

The BMW Group’s effort to realise visionary mobility is also propelled by the
technological prowess, proven once again by the crowning achievement of BMW
i8’s fourth consecutive win of the International Engine of the Year Award since
2015. A string of prestigious accolades, including the iF Design Award and the Red
Dot Award, testify to the quality and allure of the brand-new LifeDrive architecture
for BMW i models.

The acclaimed drivetrain of the New BMW i8 Coupé consists of an electric motor on
the front axle and an internal combustion engine on the rear. The high-voltage
battery has a cell capacity of 33 Ah. The electric motor output is 105 kW, and the
electric range now extends to 55 kilometres. The turbocharged three-cylinder
combustion engine featuring direct injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve
timing extracts a maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp from its displacement of just
1.5 litres, plus peak torque of 320 Nm.

The combined system output produced by the electric motor and engine acting in
unison has also increased to 275 kW/374 hp in the New BMW i8 Coupé. It
accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, with a fuel consumption of 1.8 l/100
km, which equates to 42 g/km for petrol CO 2 emissions, and 14.0 kWh/100 km for
electric power consumption.
