Motorsport News: Official launch of the 2016 Formula One PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix

The campaign for the 2016 Formula One PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix had just been officially launched. The Grand Prix event will take place from 30th September to the 2nd of October 2016 at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and this year, the event will be themed Experience RedeF1ned. The launch event was attended by PETRONAS Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications Zahariah Abd Rahman and SIC CEO, Dato Razlan Razali (both pictured above - Left to Right - Dato Razlan & Zahariah Abd Rahman).

This is the 18th edition of the Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix and as announced by the FIA last January, this would be the 16th race in this year's 21 race calendar. It is slotted directly after the Singapore Grand Prix. This is the first year in the latest three year extension where the SIC will host a leg of the F1 GP. SIC has also resurfaced the track and have additional facilities added to the circuit to make the experience slightly different and better.

The organisers are putting in more effort in order to make the event a success and fresh new ways to attract more visitors to the event. They intend to expand on the family carnival aspect and want to encourage more families to attend the event. There will be more attractive ticket types and packages for all types of fans. There will be more interesting support races, like the GP2 and GP3 races where Malaysians  Nabil Jeffri (GP2) and Akash Neil Nandy (GP3) are participating.

There will be the usual enthusiast activities - The driver autograph sessions, Malaysian School Pit Lane Walk, Drivers Fan Forum, Xtrack events - drift, rally, go-kart, ATV rides, the Strider cup and more. The Mall Area will have a supercar showcase, F1 Village with shopping and on race day (2nd October) there will be a classic car display, supercar convoy and an air show. There will be the usual after race celebrations where American rap artiste USHER will be headlining the concert.

Prior to all of this there will be live viewing sessions of the F1 races complete with contests and 50% discount on tickets. This year there will be an F1 car roadshow where it travels after the Singapore Grand Prix race (which happens about two weeks before this one) and will make stops at Johor, Melaka, Seremban before making it to KL (not under its own power lah....on a truck of course).

Do follow SIC at their Facebook and Instagram pages as there will be special contests that would offer opportunities to engage with the F1 stars/drivers.

Lots of stuff actually. Lots of ticket packages also. There is something called the VIP Team Tribune ticket where you can choose to support the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One team, Scuderia Ferrari or the Red Bull Racing team. The tribune ticket / pass which will cost RM2,459.20 allows a return trip on an executive coach from Nu Sentral to SIC as well as a served meal and team merchandise of  your choice. At SIC, you will be seated at a special zone with other fans of the same team which a chance for team drivers to stop by at the area.

Tickets begin from RM169.60 (c2 Hillstand) to RM360.40 to RM1,876.20 for seats at the main grandstand. Children between 7 to 12 get 50% off and disabled spectators also get 50% off for accessible seating zones.

SIC is throwing in a lot of stuff to entice the locals to attend this event. Foreign ticket sales are encouraging as those that have decided to watch the Singapore leg would only have to stay on for another week or two and they get to watch another F1 race soon after. It is the locals that would still make up the numbers and it is the locals that would need some encouragement to attend. This would also benefit future race contract extensions as the FIA does like an event to have a lot of locals attending.
