Happenings: The 3rd NATIONAL GD EXPRESS ROAD SAFETY CHAMPIONSHIP 2016

14th of August 2016 was a memorable day for the people of GD Express Sdn Bhd. This well known courier company held their 3rd National Road Safety Championship 2016 for their drivers and dispatch riders. This competition was held in conjunction with GD Exspress' Health & Safety Month and was held at the GD Exspress premises at Jalan Tandang, Petaling Jaya. The event was also attended by officials from MIROS (Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research), JKJR (Road Safety Department) PRDM (Royal Malaysian Police) – Traffic Police from the District HQ of Petaling Jaya, PETROSAINS (PETRONAS' subsidiary of their science centre) and the JPJ (Road Transport Department).

The competition is an ongoing effort. It is an annual event and the company states that it gives priority to road safety. GD Express allocates a budget for this and it is carried out at all of branches nationwide. These safety awareness campaigns are organised in each state and each branch. GD Express has nearly 200 branches throughout the whole of Malaysia. It also has offices in Singapore and Indonesia. The company is quite a large courier/transport company.

The event was carried out with the assistance of  the Traffic Police, PDRM

As they are a courier company, a large number of their 3,400 employees are directly involved in delivery. There are 700 motorcycle dispatch riders and 680 drivers who drive vans, 1 ton lorries and even 10 ton prime movers. These people are on the road daily and face all sorts of traffic conditions. This is why competitions like this actually hone their skill and also teach them how to be better drivers.

These days many companies place a lot of importance on road safety. This is a very good thing and this is why I am writing about this event and putting it up here. It shows you that there are large companies out there that care about their employee's well being not only in the sense of monetary rewards, but also on their development. It also shows us that they do not treat things as lightly as we think. It is also not left just to the government to educate people on road safety. But to the people themselves. More companies should organise stuff like this to promote safer driving and riding.

Oh. You can also see from the pics that the people who attended the event last Sunday (14th August) had enjoyed themselves. Aside from the competition itself, there was also lots of things to do and look at.
