The Latest Mercedes-AMG GT R & GT C Have Been Launched For The Malaysian Market

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has just launched the latest, and greatest production Mercedes-AMG cars here in Malaysia. These are the full fat, whipped cream with chocolate topping iced-latte, Mercedes-AMG GT R and the also as juicy but more livable, slightly low fat, GT C variant. They are now available for purchase at all Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Autohauses for RM RM 1,712,888 and RM 1,558,888 respectively.

Mercedes-AMG has now made its flagship line-up more evocative with the introduction of the new generation Mercedes-AMG GT R and GT C into the AMG GT family. Both have been further enhanced with a wealth of technological innovations, making them faster, feistier and even more agile than when these super sports car range was launched back in 2014.

The Mercedes-AMG GT R is the more pure of the two in terms of all out performance. It is more of a track oriented special and this is clearly seen in the half roll cage specified to the car. It is the crowning glory of the AMG GT family and it has a 0-100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds which is achievable due to its glorious sounding 4.0-litre V8 turbo engine. That engine produces 585 hp and a peak torque 700 Nm. Rear wheel drive and it is paired to the AMG Speedshift DCT 7 Speed transmission.

The GT C is more of the everyday type of AMG GT. You get more usability and it is more livable on a day to day basis. But, with 557 hp and 680 Nm powered by the 4.0-litre turbo V8 tubo engine mated to an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed transmission, the Mercedes-AMG GT C can still do 316 km/h and is still good for a 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds. In other words, still marvelous. Still very much a full monty AMG. But instead of a half cage and carbon fibre roof, you get a panoramic sunroof for more creature comfort.

“The Mercedes-AMG GT R and GT C embody the core value of our brand, “Driving Performance”, in a unique way. They are brutal, incredibly powerful and agile. At its début four years ago, it not only turned the heads of customers and sports car enthusiasts, but also created new dimensions in the competitive environment. These new generation models will deliver an imcomparable thrill that our drivers experience on the road and track,” says Michael Jopp, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

On a similar note, these are the two variants of the AMG GT that will be concentrated upon here in Malaysia. You can still order the base GT or GT S if you want to do so, but Malaysia is a market where the price structure is already sky high due to taxes and import duties. So the already exclulsive clientele of the AMG flagships usually end up buying the top fo the range models or variants. Here, those that can afford flagship vehicles usually opt for the top of the range as it is already priced sky high in the first place.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R & GT C Specification Summary (more photos below)

The Mercedes-AMG GT R has a heart that pumps 585 hp and a peak torque of 700 Nm from the (M187) AMG 4.0-litre V8 turbo engine. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The eight-cylinder engine thrills with its immediate response, allowing a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds on to a top speed of 318 km/h.

Having spent most of its development time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, known as the world’s toughest race track or the Green Hell, the AMG GT R is nicknamed Beast of the Green Hell as it went through the track in just 7:10.9 minutes.

The Mercedes-AMG GT C, on the other hand, has a performance level that slots in between the AMG GT S and the AMG GT R. Powered by the 4.0-litre V8 turbo engine mated to an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed transmission, the GT C produces 557 hp and 680 Nm of torque from 1900 to 5750 rpm, allowingthe sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, and this fulminating acceleration continues until the top speed of 316 km/h is reached.

AMG Design & Style
The design of the AMG GT R embodies the sensuous purity of hot and cool. All elements of the vehicle contributes to the inherent technical benefit and at the same time, enhances the driving dynamics. The low-slung front section and the shark nose-like radiator grille lowers the vehicles’s back-pressure point, enhancing the flow of cooling air and the car’s aerodynamic performance. Two aerodynamically-shaped horizontal fins are placed to ensure that the increased cooling-air requirements of the AMG GT R drive system are met as they route the airflow to the radiators without loss.

The AMG GT R also comes with the wheel arch liners with special cooling-air slits to ensure ideal airflow through the double wheel arch radiators. In order to optimise the flow properties of the wheel arches while improving the Cd value, the GT R additionally features air curtains on the outside of the front fascia.

At a speed of 80 km/h in RACE mode, the carbon component that weighs only about two kilograms that is sealed almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine moves downward by about 40 millimetres and changes the airflow. This enables the AMG GT R to steer more precisely, especially during fast cornering and under high lateral acceleration. In addition, the drag coefficient ialso improved.

The overall aerodynamics concept of the AMG GT R ensures an optimal balance of lift and downforce in all operating states and furthermore reduces drag compared with the AMG GT.

Both, the GT R and the GT C adopt the AIRPANEL active air management system. This system has vertical louvres positioned in the lower area directly behind the front apron. These louvres are electronically controlled and can be opened and closed in around a second by an electric motor to improve the airflow and consequently the aerodynamic performance.

The louvres are usually closed – be it at top speed, during braking and when cornering at high speed. This position lowers drag and makes it possible to route the air to the underbody to reduce front lift even further. Only once predefined components have reached certain temperatures and the demand for cooling air is particularly high do the louvres open and allow the maximum amount of cooling air to flow to the heat exchangers. This calls for highly intelligent and fast control.

Motorsport-derived suspension
The suspension of the AMG GT R is systematically designed for racetrack use. Wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers on the front and rear axle are manufactured entirely out of forged aluminium in order to reduce the unsprung masses. The double-wishbone concept locates the wheel firmly, with minimal elastic movements.

The uniball spherical bearings on the lower wishbones of the rear axle are also inspired by motorsport. They are significantly more wear-resistant than wishbone bushings and due to their design have no play, which means toe-in and camber do not change even under high loads. As a result, the AMG GT R can be driven with even more precision.

The coil-over suspension combined with the AMG RIDE CONTROL makes it possible to influence the dive and roll behaviour as well as the grip of the AMG GT R precisely as needed to tailor them to personal preferences or to the particular racetrack.

In the Mercedes-AMG GT C, the sports suspension is also combined with the AMG RIDE CONTROL continuously variable, adaptive damping system. The system is electronically controlled and automatically adapts the damping on each wheel to the current handling situation, the speed and the road conditions.

New Light Controls
The new light controls of the LED high performance headlights now show parallels to the AMG GT 4-door coupé and therefore further enhance the AMG GT family connection. A tri-functional, arched light guidetakes on the functions of daytime running light, navigation light and turn signals.

The multi-chamber reflector system with three single reflectors each for dipped beam and main beam not only ensures optimal illumination of the roadway, but also gives the AMG GT a sporty, dynamic look which gains even more optical depth as the result of the black background. The light of the LED tail lights also appears even deeper set and sportier through the dark background.

Rear Design
From the back, the new look of the rear apron is striking. The sporty black diffuser insert is redesigned for the AMG GT C. At the same time, the tail pipe cover is visually redesigned and matched to the shape of the AMG GT 4-door coupé. The AMG GT C has trapeze shaped twin tail pipe covers. Whereas, the rear design of the AMG GT R keeps its distinctive shape with the large, centrally positioned tail pipe cover with centre bar. It is flanked by two more black tail pipes on the left and right of the diffuser.

The carbon-fibre roof, yellow-painted brake callipers and prominent fixed wing accentuates the racing DNA of the AMG GT R. The AMG GT C, on the other hand, comes with a panoramic sunroof and a striking red-painted brake callipers. The side view additionally benefits from the AMG 5-twin-spoke forged wheels and the AMG cross-spoke forged wheels for the AMG GT R and GT C, respectively.

A new option is the parking package that now comes with a front camera as well as the PARKTRONIC park assistant and the reverse camera, which increases everyday suitability when manoeuvring. PARKTRONIC assists the driver in parking and manoeuvring with visual and acoustic signals. It also facilitates parking and leaving a parking space in tight confines. An approach to a detected obstacle is indicated by visual and audible signals. Only the yellow LED lights are activated at first. If the distance continues to narrow, the red LED lights are also activated and warning tones are emitted.

High performance – even on the inside

The new telematics architecture in both, the Mercedes-AMG GT R and GT C makes the innovative, standard fully digital instrument display with the 12.3-inch instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch multimedia display on the centre console. The instrument cluster offers an entirely new screen design with the three AMG-specific display styles – Classic, Sporty and Supersport. In the Supersport mode, there is also extensive additional information specific to AMG, such as a prompt borrowed from motorsport to shift up in manual transmission mode.

Via the left-hand touch control button on the steering wheel, preferred information can also be displayed on the left or right-hand side of the instrument panel – for example the classic speedometer and rev counter, navigation information or assistance systems through to detailed engine data. Sporty drivers especially can fade in a g-force display or the current output and torque values.

The eye-catching feature in the interior is the centre console with its stylised V8 design, not only putting the spotlight on the brand's performance claim but also perfectly fulfilling functional requirements. With the TFT technology, the display buttons use intuitively comprehensible symbols to show the function and are easy to operate with just a small tap of the finger. The display buttons are supplemented by the two rocker switches for the drive programmes and volume control.

The two AMG GT models have the standard new AMG steering wheel buttons. These consist of a round controller with an integrated display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned color display buttons with switches beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke. In the AMG GT R, the steering wheel is completely covered with DINAMICA microfiber while the steering wheel of the AMG GT C is in black nappa leather/DINAMICA microfiber.

The Beast of the Green Hell now comes with the AMG Track Package. It comprises a roll-over protection system, enclosed 4-point safety harenesses for driver, and a 2-kg fire extinguisher. The bolted steel roll cage of the roll-over protection system consists of a main roll bar, a brace for mounting the harnesses, two rear braces as well as a diagonal X-brace in the rear end. The system further increases the already excellent vehicle rigidity and thus also has a positive influence on the vehicle's driving dynamics. The AMG bucket seats further enhances the racecar feel of the GT R.

Also available in the Mercedes-AMG GT R is AMG TRACK PACE – a system that transform COMAND and a smartphone into a personal race engineer. The drive in the AMG GT R can be analysed in detail, using more than 80 items of vehicle-specific data such as, laps, sector times on established tracks as well as on ones that is manually configured, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, accelerator and brake pedal
movements as well as steering angles assist in logging and continuously improving the performance.

Driving pleasure
The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT allows an adjustment of the vehicle’s characteristics in the AMG GT by turning a switch. It works even faster than a racing team - an individually desired set-up for engine, transmission, suspension or steering can be called up immediately. Depending on the selected drive program, the vehicle either becomes more comfortable or ready for the racetrack.

This integrated driving dynamics regulation expands the functions of ESP ® (electronic stability programme) to exact dosing of power distribution at the rear axis and the characteristics of steering. In this way, the AMG GT becomes even more agile at its highest stability. In the first place, AMG DYNAMICS optimises the transverse dynamics by a higher lateral acceleration, better traction and load change reactions.

AMG DYNAMICS calculates how the vehicle will react. To do this, the system uses the available sensors that detect the speed, the steering angle or the yaw rate, for instance. Based on the pilot-control principle it is possible to anticipate the vehicle behaviour on the basis of the driver's actions and the data from the sensors. The control system reacts in this way even before the driver – and with no noticeable or intervention of the system. The driver gets a very authentic driving feel with high cornering dynamics and optimum traction as well as high stability and predictable handling. Even experienced drivers receive optimum assistance without feeling patronised by the system.
