Last year Hino Motors Sales Malaysia Sdn Bhd organised the Hino Ultiamte Drive truck driver's challenge here in Malaysia. The truck driver's contest received super positive feedback from the truckers so this year, Hino Malaysia had organised the same competition but it now sports a new the name the - HINO SMART DRIVING CONTEST. This is so that the driver's challenge is more in line with the Hino Smart Driving Program. As with last year, the contest was held over in Hino Total Support Customer Center (HTSCC), Sendayan.
The two-day event was held on 9 and 10 October 2019 brought together 25 Hino truckers from 13 companies participating in this friendly competition to build their skill and compete spirit to each other in the same profession. The purpose of this competition is to find out the best among the best but also to instill knowledge and camaraderie among truckers here. It also rewards the truckers with the feeling that their profession rewards them in all aspects, including that self-satisfaction rewards that money cannot buy.
As for Hino Malaysia, the HINO SMART DRIVING CONTEST was organised to test and upgrade the driving skills of truck drivers especially those who are driving HINO trucks. This is part of their social responsibility where they would like to help improve road safety here in Malaysia.
The driving contest is where drivers will be tested through several exciting challenges and programmes which includes both theoretical and practical test. This contest also utilises the first Hino training centre outside of Japan, Hino Total Support Customer Centre (HTSCC), Hino truck drivers in Malaysia are now able to further enhance their professional skills especially in road handling, safety, and fuel-efficient driving techniques. The company values the importance of providing regular training and equipping Hino vehicle (both truck and bus) owners with the latest product knowledge, safety, and eco-driving skill techniques.
So this contest, and also this training centre is actually unique as no where else in the world other than Japan has such a contest for Hino truckers. Managing Director of Hino Malaysia, Mr. Atsushi Uchiyama stated that the HINO SMART DRIVING CONTEST initially aims to crown proud recognition not only for the drivers but to bring up the company image as well.
“This competition is a great opportunity for drivers to show their skills and be motivated to improve to be able to emerge as the winner. This is a proud recognition not just for the drivers but a boost for the company image as well,” said Mr. Uchiyama.
“Through this competition, we aim to help boost the brand image and productivity of our customers besides making them feel proud of being a valued Hino customer and driver,” he added.
As for the challenges put into the contest, the participants were evaluated in four main area. These are theory, practical driving skills, driver familiarisation which focused on daily vehicle inspection, and fuel-efficient economy driving. So it is quite comprehensive in nature as all aspects of what a truck driver is required to do is covered.
Under the theory section, participants will have to answer a range of multiple-choice questions on general safety and driving knowledge.
The driving skills section will cover seven (7) sessions on different practical tracks which include; s-junction, garage parking, crank course, parallel parking, turn-back course, uphill/downhill, and emergency brake on wet road.
For daily vehicle inspection, participants must complete one round truck inspection that includes engine, brake, and clutch, oil leakage, visibility, electrical equipment, and tyres.
Participants will also be tested on fuel-efficiency driving techniques and consumption whilst driving their vehicles.
Hino Malaysia plans to open the training centre for the use of government and public agencies to ensure their training projects for professional drivers are successful with the Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF) claimable. This is so that the company is at the forefront of good commercial vehicle driving practice and that many may benefit from it aside from only Hino vehicle drivers.
All of these initiatives is based on their QDR motto, which stands for Quality, Durability, and Reliability. Hino sets a mission to develop a product that perfect fit for each customer’s businesses with its core Two Values; ‘Maximise Vehicle Uptime’ and ‘Minimise Vehicle Lifetime Cost’.
Aside from the above, Hino Malaysia is not relying on their mere presence in this country even though it has been around for 40 years. They have also stated that they will not only increase performance in Sales but also After-Sales Services through various customer engagement programmes. One such programme launched is its new warranty for HINO 300 Series which now upgraded from three years and 100,000 km warranty to five years and 200,000 km warranty as one to enhance its after-sales support.
We here at Motoring Malaysia have been documenting Hino Malaysia's progress over the past few years and it does seem that they are one of the leading commercial vehicle companies here in Malaysia. They not only sell quality products at the price segment they are in, but they are actually willing to give back to the country where they are selling their products. This is what all companies should be, and with the contest above continuing into its second year, they have to be commended for what good stuff they are giving.
And congratulations to the winners!
