Video Vlog: 2019 BMW M5 at Sepang Circuit - Some Thoughts on the Performance Sedan While Driving It and Following the 2019 M2 Competition

Hello folks! Been a little busy with other pursuits in life. I also have to say that my 15 year old daughter is also in the midst of having her PT3 or lower secondary school exams to those abroad. So I've been busy running errands and other stuff. Anyway, here is Yours Truly piloting the 2019 BMW M5 sports sedan around the Sepang Circuit whilst following a 2019 M2 Competition.

This video was recorded at the recent BMW M2 Competition launch which was held at the said Sepang Circuit. The 2019 M5, which has 600hp and 700Nm torque was a really nice drive. The power is transmitted to all four wheels via an 8 speed automatic transmission and the whole package worked very well on track. It did make the large, comfortable sedan quite efficient on the track and it could easily romp away from the M2 Competition which you see in the video (at the end bit).

It helps when you have about 200 horses extra on tap and even though the M2 Competition is a lighter more nimble car, the extra grunt and the extra grip actually made the M5 the faster car on track. I did enjoy the M2 more in some ways actually. It is the challenge of driving a purer car.

The M2 Competition was like a wild animal compared to the M5. It may be slower (which is bloody subjective in this case), but it provided more fun that the M5. But note that you actually get a whole different level of fun in the M5. It is a precise rocketship that will take you from one end of the Malaysian Peninsula to the other in comfort and ridiculous speed. The main difference is that if you drove it to Krabi in Thailand from Kuala Lumpur in the M5 you may still be feeling quite fresh even if you were doing a 200kmh cruise up north. Try that in the M2 Comp and you will definitely feel thrashed after the drive.

The M2 Comp is a purer driver's car. It has less soundproofing, it rides firmer and the engine noise all intrudes into the cabin whereas the V8 biturbo engine of the M5 woofles away in mechanical refinement. It isn't that the twin turbocharged 3.0 six cylinder engine of the M2 unrefined...it is, but it screams like a banshee or here, a pontianak, on song. Totally unadulterated in terms of soundtrack but it will be quite tiring for a very long drive.

So what it the main difference in the M5 and the M2? Well, the M2 is based on the 1 and 2 series, which means entry level BMW here. So the M5 gives you comfort and luxury with the ability to whack the crap out of most cars out there on the highway and even up some mountainside road.

The M5 is the car to drive to Sepang and the M2 is the car to drive on Sepang. But M5 on Sepang? Still sublime.

Oh, here is the previous video on the M2 Comp if you haven't watched it yet.
