New Motoring Malaysia video out on our YouTube Channel folks! This time, it's a truck vid. We test drive the Hino 300 Series Automatic Transmission Light-Duty Truck. This happened during the launch of the Hino Malaysia and Yamato Transport Malaysia Driver's Aptitude Test & Safety Training Program held on 15 April 2019 at the Hino Total Support Customer Center HTSCC at Sendayan.
Hino Motors Sales (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (HMSM), and Yamato Transport (M) Sdn. Bhd. (YTM),have joined forces and together, they have launched a new safe driving training program that leverages both companies’ safety-related experience and capabilities. The new driver's program is based on Yamato's driver aptitude test (DAT) which is currently being used in Japan. This training program is being offered to Yamato's Malaysian drivers at Hino's training facility, Hino Total Support Customer Center (HTSCC) in Sendayan
So they showed us the training course with its theory and practical side of things. Part of this was the on-road driver training which required the use of some trucks, which is why we managed to try out the Hino 300 Series you see here.
The truck is pretty good and so suitable for urban transport. Its automatic transmission will actually lessen driver fatigue as he or she will not have to manually shift gears in heavy traffic. More focus to just driving. It may also save more fuel as the gearbox may be more efficient than the human driver in changing gears. It has a 4,000cc 4 cylinder commonrail direct injection turbodiesel engine which makes 156Ps and 429Nm of torque. This engine powers the rear wheels through a 6 speed automatic transmission (in place of a 6 speed manual transmission).
The truck is so much easier to drive as you have one less item to think about. A truck that shifts gears by itself is always a good thing. So here, you just focus on the steering and the throttle as well as brakes. Speaking of brakes, the truck stopped straight and true during the ABS test on the wet stretch of circuit at the HTSCC track.
The drive of the light-duty truck was interesting actually. Especially on a banked circuit. Not many people outside of Hino truck drivers have experienced driving a truck at an angle. Usually we do it with cars at a test track. Seldom lorries.
