Perodua is back in Singapore! The Malaysian compact car company has just launched the current, third-generation Perodua Myvi over there at an event held at Perocom Auto Pte Ltd, the official distributor of Perodua in Singapore. Two variants are available, the Myvi 1.3 X AT and 1.5 H AT and are priced at SGD64,800 (RM197,093) and SGD69,800 (RM212,301) respectively, inclusive of Goods and Services Tax and the Certificate of Entitlement (COE), which as at February 2019 costs approximately SGD25,689.
The amount may sound massive to us here in Malaysia, SGD64,800 or RM197,093 actually means that you can buy a Toyota Camry 2.5G over here but do note that a Toyota Camry over there costs SGD198,000+ last I checked. So it is subjective as you'd be earning Singapore Dollars there. And SGD 25K for the COE somehow does not seem so bad until you take everything into account, like taxes and excise duties.
So anyway, moving on with the launch of the Myvi, the launch event was held last Saturday at Perocom Auto Pte Ltd’s outlet in Ubi (which is an automotive hub over there) where it had attracted some 250 customers. Being the authorised distributor of Perodua for quite a while now, Perocom Auto has sold the Kancil, Kembara, Kelisa, first-generation Myvi, Viva, Axia and Bezza in Singapore. It has been the sole authorised Perodua distributor in the island nation since 1997 and hopes are high with the new Myvi.
It has to be noted that this marks the first export destination of the Perodua Myvi as a Perodua Myvi. Although Perodua has already begun exporting the current-generation Myvi to Indonesia, the model is badged as a Daihatsu there and is called the Sirion. So this is the Myvi being sold as a Myvi overseas. So it is a milestone for Perodua.
“The current-generation Myvi’s foray into Singapore is significant in terms of brand presence despite the high barriers for entry into this mature market. This also marks the model’s first export destination under the Perodua brand,” said Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer.
In terms of Singapore as a point of sale for Perodua, the Singapore car market is a challenge as it is highly regulated with the COE as well as other taxes. The number of new cars registered in Singapore varies from year to year, numbering 80,281 units in 2018, 91,922 in 2017, 87,504 in 2016 and 57,589 in 2015, according to Land Transport Authority (LTA) statistics and is based on the current price of COE in many ways. The sum of SGD 25,000+ is the current value for cars up to 1,600cc or 97kw of power. There have been occassions where the COE have gone down to about SGD12,000 or shot up to SGD60,000. It's a lucky, or unlucky draw here folks.

“The Perodua Myvi has been very well received by Malaysians, and the enthusiasm has also found its way to Singapore, where there is a niche yet loyal cult following eagerly awaiting the arrival of the third-generation model,” said Perocom Auto Pte Ltd Managing Director Mr John Ng.
The third-generation Perodua Myvi was first launched in Malaysia in November 2017. It is Perodua's most sophisticated model to date, offering high quality, technology and fuel efficiency in a stylish and compact package. It is also unique compared to other Perodua as it is the most independently-designed vehicle in Perodua’s history, with an upper body developed completely designed and manufacturerd with in-house knowledge thereby making Perodua have the capability of actually designing and styling a car by themselves without the assistance of partner Daihatsu.
Over 110,000 units of the third-generation Perodua Myvi have found homes in Malaysia to date. I have to say that it could make perfect sense for Singaporeans to buy a Myvi or a Perodua. They can actually save some of their hard earned cash by servicing it in Malaysia rather than in Singapore. Of course, the distributor would like them to do it locally, but this is an option nonetheless. It could also mean that any Singapore registered Myvi would never have any servicing issues if their drivers end up in Malaysia on a trip too - Motoring Malaysia 2019
