Proton Cars recorded Malaysian sales of 7,007units for January 2019 ensuring the manufacturer have an estimated market share of 14.5%, before official confirmation by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). This upsurge in sales numbers was led by the newly launched Proton X70 SUV, which is Proton's first SUV and the first car that has come out from the Geely-Proton tie-up.
Deliveries of the Proton X70 have set a Malaysia market record for most registrations for an SUV in
its launch month - December 2018. The high numbers continued into January 2019 with 2,777 units registered. According to Proton, this meant that the Proton X70 set a new record for the most C-segment SUV registrations in a single calendar month.
Interestingly, the large number of SUVs registered were instrumental in PROTON posting way better sales figures than before. Compared to the previous month sales increased by 33.6% while year-on-year, the figure represents a 46.5% growth over January 2018. It does show the impact that the X70 is having in the Malaysian market. Still not up to Perodua numbers, but the two main points (according to Yours Truly) is that people have warmed up to a Proton SUV and secondly, people do not mind buying a RM100,000 and above Proton. Prior to this Proton found it hard to move the Perdana sedan in large numbers. The SUV strategy seems to be working.
Proton also wishes to announce that is their increased number of 3S and 4S sales and service facilities nationwide. There are currently 74 PROTON 3S/4S outlets and dealers in operation as at the end of the month with more set to open throughout the year. Together they will assist PROTON in achieving their Sales Service Index (SSI) and Customer Service Index (CSI) target scores. The push for better customer experience is sorely needed, especially in aftersales and we do hope that the people manning the 3S and 4S centers are determined and able to provide quality service that customers nowadays demand.
“PROTON is thankful to be able to start 2019 on a positive note. We already knew we would end the month with the most 3S/4S outlets in the industry but the market leading sales growth rate figure and the record setting number of SUV registrations is due to the humbling support we have received from Malaysian car buyers. There is still a long way to go for the brand to fully recover but we will strive to continue to deliver a premium experience at our outlets while improving our model offerings,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON.
It is hoped that the momentum continues for Proton with the new X70 and the better sales and aftersales facilities.
