PROTON has been continuing their marketing push on their already proven to be popular first ever SUV, the Proton X70. To date, the Malaysian car maker has delivered over 5,500 units of the X70 since its launch late last year. Now, nine Proton X70 owners have decided to drive to China and back in their vehicles, a journey of about 13,000km to showcase the capabilities of the X70. Trip is organised by the Borneo Automobile Leisure Touring Team and the Kunming Scenery-Customer International Travel Co. China. As it is such an epic trip, Proton has decided to be the main sponsor for this private initiative. Quite obvious but indeed welcome as the spirit of adventure is strong with this new Proton.
The overland trip will four countries, 13 cities and 13,000km. The destination is Hangzhou, China, the most populous city of Zhejiang Province and home to Proton’s joint venture partner, Geely. While the journey would be long but not a treacherous one as this is 2019, and not 1919, the convoy of X70 was flagged off at the PROTON Centre of Excellence (COE) earlier this morning. The entire trip is estimated to take 33 days for the 33 participants to complete with checkpoints set up along the route at dealer locations and service centres whether here in Malaysia or in China (Geely dealerships most likely).
When the convoy arrives at Hangzhou, the participants will get the chance to visit the Geely Experience Centre and learn more about how Geely has transformed into one of the fastest growing automotive companies as well as getting a chance to view their newest models.
According to the folks at Proton, the long distance challenge presents an opportunity to showcase the Proton X70 to buyers in overseas markets, especially those in ASEAN countries, which are key to future sales growth for Proton. Proton also wants to showcase the X70's capabilities in handling different climate, terrain and road conditions as it travels from Malaysia to China. The participants will also have memories that they will cherish for a very long time.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony of the trip Dato’ Radzaif Mohamed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer PROTON, said “While this is a private initiative, PROTON is happy to offer its support as a sign of appreciation to its customers. The Proton X70 has been very well received by Malaysians and we hope that by showing regional car buyers its capabilities, we will be laying the groundwork for future export sales success.”
After completing their visit to Hangzhou, the trip participants will make their way home to Malaysia via a different route from the one they set off. They will however be heading back to the PROTON Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya, Selangor.
We hope that the convoy will be successful in this endeavour of theirs in every way.
