Recently, Groupe PSA and Naza Automotive Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (NAM) held its first Supplier Day event in Gurun Plant located at Kedah Darul Aman, northwestern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Held on the 20th of February 2019, the response to the inaugural Supplier Day was positive with 140 representatives from automotive industry suppliers, global industry experts and government authorities nationwide attending the get together. This was the first time NAM and its largest stakeholders, Groupe PSA has had a gathering between them and the local vendors since the official handover was done last year. Some news on upcoming models were revealed as news of the local assembly was shared. New 2019/2020 Peugeot 208 seems to be in the pipeline for CKD.
At the NAM Supplier Day, Laurence Noel, CEO & Director of the Board of NAM, ASEAN Senior Vice President, took the opportunity to present Groupe PSA’s Southeast Asia Push to Pass strategy and ambitions in terms of products, operations, local integration and the role of NAM in the ambitions to become a major player in the Malaysian automotive industry.
Yann Martin, Senior Vice President, Head of Vehicle and Powertrain Procurement for Groupe PSA was also present and had prompted the guests on the purchasing power of Groupe PSA, expectations in term of localization, new business opportunities but also the potential benefits to be part of Groupe PSA worldwide supplier network. Both essentially spoke of the future for NAM, its suppliers as well as the overall picture including Groupe PSA's goal for the near future and onwards.
One bit of news that was interesting is that NAM aims to launch the first models in April 2019, planned in its agile roadmap to cater for Malaysian domestic and Southeast Asia export markets (the main purpose of Groupe PSA buying a stake in NAM). In this dynamic and strategic region, two new models based on EMP2 (Which includes models like the Peugeot 308, 3008, Citroen C4 and up to the Peugeot 508) and CMP platforms, produced in our very own Gurun Plant are expected to be launched every year in the future.
The CMP platform is also known as the EMP1 which the upcoming Peugeot 208 is based upon. So that being said, expect the all-new Peugeot 208 to be locally assembled at the very least by 2020 here in Malaysia. That folks, is quite a nice looking compact hatchback!
