8th Generation All-New Toyota Camry Gets a 5 Star ASEAN NCAP Crash Test Rating

The official distributor of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, UMW Toyota Motor SdnBhd (UMWT), recently announced that the All New Toyota Camry was awarded the 5-star ratings at the recent New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) crash test results. The impressive 5 star ASEAN NCAP rating is due to the large D Segment sedan fitted with a lot of Active Safety Equipment. Active safety features an important segment in determining a car's safety rating in the Assessment Program.

The All New Camry which was launched in Malaysia sometime in December 2018. It has been completely redesigned for the 8th generation. This familiar model has been in Malaysia since the 1990s and it is one of the more popular D-segment sedans (in an ever shrinking market).

For this 8th generation, the All New Toyota Camry is only available in the 2.5V variant. Only one sole fully loaded variant is offered in Malaysia. Most likely due to the shrinking D segment sedan market due to the growth of SUVs. It is a shame as the new Camry, looks darn sporty, drives very well (quite a surprise for a Camry) and feels good in terms of what's offered within.

The 8th gen Camry has Toyota's advanced Toyota Safety Sense systems such as Pre-collision System, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) as well as Automatic High Beam (AHB). Using the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, Toyota surprisingly decided to take a new approach in designing, engineering and developing a Camry that has very responsive handling, tougher vehicle body and other world-class features that provide peace of mind, as well as the pleasure of driving. Again, most of us were surprised about this Camry. So much more youthful than before. So not like the uncle-mobiles of before. I wonder how the uncles have taken to the new styling and performance. Even me, of uncle age, actually likes this Camry.

Anyway, back to the Camry's latest ASEAN NCAP encounter. The 8th Gen Camry (the Thailand 2.0G variant was tested - which is actually where most Camry from out region come from), managed to receive 49.04 points for the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 22.68 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP) and 19.75point for Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) assessments. With the Camry scoring in all aspects including effective breaking avoidance, seat belt reminders, blind spot technology and advance safety assist technologies, it received 5-Star rating with an overall score of 91.47 points.

The announcement was made at the launching ceremony of the ASEAN NCAP Labelling Compliance Guideline 2019 for Malaysia by Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail, Minister of Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).  According to the announcement at the event, it will be made mandatory for manufacturers and their authorised dealers to display the ASEAN NCAP rating label on all vehicles on sale starting from 1st March 2020. This will ensure that consumers are well aware of the NCAP ratings of the vehicle they want to purchase.

Personally, the brochures usually given out already spell out this detail and most sales representatives will actually want to tell potential customers about the car's features. However, this isn't a new guideline that was started by the new ruling party. It was discussed prior to the elections that happened mid-2018. So it is just an ongoing policy that will be implemented.
