Six new Vespa models displayed at 70th Anniversary Vespa celebration in Publika Shopping Gallery, Kuala Lumpur

I actually went to see some Vespa scooters at the recent Malaysian Vespa 70th Anniversary Celebrations. A big thing since I am not really a bike kinda guy. But this is a Vespa. Something cute, cuddly and very Italian. Not to mention a style icon. I like style icons.  The event, “The Largest Vespa Gathering”, was held at Publika Shopping Gallery last Saturday, 19th November 2016.

Aside from about 500 or so Vespa scooters which rode from the Naza Auto Mall beside the Federal Highway to Publika, Naza Premira Sdn Bhd, the sole importer and distributor of Vespa products in Malaysia, also put on display six new Vespa variants that are now on offer to the Malaysian public.

The new variants include: three 70th Anniversary model (Vespa GTS, Vespa PX and Vespa Primavera); two newly upgraded 2016 models (Vespa Sprint ABS and Vespa Primavera ABS); and the recently introduced Vespa Sprint Adventure.

I loved the original PX 70th Anniversary version that was displayed (pictured above and right at the start of this article). This is the final year that the original 2 stroke Vespa PX150 will be in production - the others on display, are newer 4 stroke engines. This one is special in that the PX Anniversary is s powered by a 150cc, 2-stroke single-cylinder engine with both electric and kick-starter systems.

It rides on a swing arm, spring coil and hydraulic monoshock absorber with disc brakes at the front and a spring coil with hydraulic monoshock absorber with drum brakes at the rear with 10-inch wheels. The transmission system is like the original from 30 or was it 40 years ago. It also has a spare tyre on the left side of the bike which actually balances the scooter as the engine in offset to the right of it. So traditional. So unique. It oozes so much character that even the sportier, newer Vespa feel beneath it. Heritage. It's all about heritage.
