PROTON Announces Price Reduction of 1.2% to 5.7% for Their Vehicle Models - UPDATED With Price List

In line with the Malaysian government’s recent announcement of zero sales tax (0%SST) for cars sold in Malaysia for a six month period beginning 15 June 2020 to 31 December 2020, PROTON will reduce its car prices by 1.2% - 5.7%. The new reduction in prices reflect the zero SST incentive which is a measure implemented by the Malaysian government to try boost the economy as the country emerges from its COVID-19 induced lockdown.

Explaining the new pricing arrangement and also commenting on the Malaysian government's effort in trying to negate the effects of the prolonged lockdown, Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON (pictured above) said, “PROTON would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone looking for a new vehicle that there has never been a better time to own a new PROTON. With our industry leading number of 3S/4S outlets, refreshed model range, periodic improvements we have introduced as well as the new prices, our customers will receive even better value for their money.”

“We applaud the government’s initiative to spur growth in our economy via the PENJANA plan and their recognition of Malaysia’s automotive industry as a critical piece of the national ecosystem. With 700,000 people working both directly and indirectly in the industry, it contributes approximately 4.3% to the national GDP and will thus play a leading role in any economic recovery effort,” he added.

Aside from the tax rebate, PROTON is also implementing several strategies of their to spur growth in sales. Of course, this new strategies also take into account buyer sentiment which will err on the side of caution for the rest of 2020 as many may be affected by job security, pay cuts and other economic worries. Of course, they also have to practice the new standard operating procedures which are the new norms in terms of dealing their customers at their showrooms and service centres.

These include deploying strict social distancing and disinfection measures at its showrooms and service centres while promoting the use of online bookings for contactless transactions.

“As a national automotive brand, PROTON can help reinvigorate all segments of the automotive industry. We continue to work closely with our vendors and dealers to ensure they are able to weather the economic storm and are ready to help drive the economy forward again,” elaborated Dr Li Chunrong.

Do note that we are not publishing a full price list for Proton models here simply because we weren't provided one and that one should know that since all Proton models at the moment are fully assembled in Malaysia, you basically get a 10% rebate on the SST. Or full SST rebate. [UPDATE - We have to New Price List]

And when you head over to a PROTON showroom, there are actually other offers and promotions as most car brands out there know the situation on the street is challenging, so it requires additional incentives for customers. Because of that, just call or head over to the nearest outlet and find out the latest offers and promotions aside from this price adjustment.

On a personal note, this government incentive should only balance out things slightly rather than cause a flood of new car sales. As I mentioned above, the economic situation of many people these days are quite fragile and many would opt to not spend unnecessarily. What this small SST free period would do is to balance things out a little as those which some extra cash may be tempted to replace their vehicles instead of waiting.

Hopefully it would help out an industry which had predicted over 600,000 units total industry volume to something around 400,000 units for this year.
