Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Gets its Malaysian Launch

The new Aston Martin DBS Superleggera has been launched here in Malaysia. Aston Martin has revived its 'DBS' moniker with this car (first used in 1967 with the Aston Martin DBS) as well as using the 'Superleggera' name which pays homage to the innovative lightweight construction methods pioneered by Italian coachbuilder, Touring. Truth be told, it does deserve both iconic names, as the new DBS Superleggera is indeed drop dead gorgeous.

The new DBS Superleggera will be available for viewing over at the Aston Martin Kuala Lumpur showroom and has an estimated price from RM1,205,000 before duties or even insurance. But RM1.205 million is quite worth it for this sleek coupe with its sculpted carbon fibre body panels and uniquely Aston Martin styling.

This is Aston Martin's new Super GT flagship sports car, the new 2019 DBS Superleggera replaces the Vanquish S and everything is up a notch. As it should be these days as everyone usually needs to push harder and higher. So the DBS Superleggera has a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 with 725PS, 900Nm of torque, a top speed of 340km/h and 0-100km/h in just 3.4 seconds. Mid range is impressive with 80-160km/h achieved in fourth gear in a mere 4.2 seconds.

These are actually good figures for what is a Grand Tourer and not an all out Super sports car. This is designed to bring you in comfort while you are doing some inter-continental driving, like say from the UK to the French Riviera and you'd still be feeling fresh at the end of a long day of driving. This is also why cars like this Aston Martin is preferred as the Gentleman's Express. Like James Bond.

“The DBS Superleggera completes the brand’s ambition to replace each of our existing two-door sports car models as part of the transformational Second Century Plan,” explained Ms. Nancy Chen, General Manager for Aston Martin, South and Southeast Asia during the launch.

“The DBS Superleggera is beautiful in its absolute; it is the return of a great Aston Martin name, and signals Aston Martin’s return to the very pinnacle of the Super GT sector. These credentials itself makes us extremely proud to be the only retailer in Malaysia to house this iconic model,” explained Mr. Jerry Lee, Managing Director of Wearnes Quest. “Its remarkable design and performance, making up this compelling character opens up a new niche for us, targeting those who command no less than absolute power and prominence.”

In terms of Aston Martin's Second Century Plan, this new car is somewhat unique in that it breaches the gap between what was seen in the limited run Aston Martin Vulcan and the upcoming 2021 Vanquish (there have been press releases by Aston Martin on this new upcoming car - it is a MID engined supercar. Aston Martin's 2nd Century Plan is super unique!). So this car could be the last front engined, flagship from Aston Martin. And that in itself could make this a future classic.

The 2019 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Product Brief:-

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera proudly evokes the towering reputation of Aston Martin’s hardest hitting and best-loved flagships from the past in a much stronger, broader and more muscular form than ever, to cool and control the most powerful production Aston Martin.

Evolving innovative aerodynamic concepts first seen on the DB11 – such as the curlicue and Aeroblade – and then taking things further with an F1-inspired double-diffuser, DBS Superleggera generates 180kg of downforce at VMAX: the highest figure ever for a series of production Aston Martin. This significant increase comes with no additional drag penalty.

As befits its flagship status, DBS Superleggera features a high level of craftsmanship with extensive scope for personalisation via a generous choice of options. Supple, aromatic leather and Alcantara upholstery comes as standard, as do the Sports Plus performance seats and steering wheel. There is a choice of two alloy wheel designs: the standard ‘Y’ Spoke Forged Wheel and the Lightweight Twin Spoke Forged wheel. Both are 21” in diameter and fitted with Pirelli tyres developed specifically for DBS Superleggera. There is also a choice of striking Designer Specifications, with specially chosen colour and trim combinations selected by the Aston Martin Design Team to accentuate certain aspects of the DBS Superleggera’s character.

The Powerplant

The heart of DBS Superleggera is Aston Martin’s 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimise the centre-of-gravity and weight distribution, this high-performance engine develops 725PS at 6500rpm and 900Nm from 1800-5000rpm. Detailed tuning of the V12 together with a new exhaust strategy with active valves and quad tail pipes ensures DBS Superleggera has a commanding and powerful sound character, particularly in the more aggressive dynamic modes, while retaining a level of refinement and civility that compliments its role as the consummate Super GT.

DBS Superleggera deploys its power and torque to the rear wheels via a new rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Featuring a mechanical limited-slip differential and torque vectoring for precise, predictable and exploitable handling and a lower final drive for explosive in-gear acceleration, DBS Superleggera combines the responses of a supercar with the refinement of a GT, with the capability of a maximum speed of 340km/h.

The Chassis

The chassis is an evolution of the latest generation lightweight bonded aluminium structure first seen on the DB11, with forged double wishbones at the front and a sophisticated multi-link system at the rear – a geometrically optimal multilink rear axle and an even more stable stance thanks to a track that is 10mm wider than the DB11 at the front and 20mm wider at the rear.

Latest generation adaptive damping is fitted as standard, with sensors detecting the prevailing driving conditions, as well as the demands the driver is making of the car. Both the powertrain and chassis have a choice of three dynamic modes – GT, Sport and Sport Plus – which can be selected by the driver to intensify or relax the DBS Superleggera’s responses according to the needs of the driver.

Equipment Levels

The DBS Superleggera features a generous level of standard equipment, including keyless entry, tyre pressure monitoring system and a 360-degree camera with Parking Distance Display and Park Assist. The audio system has DAB plus Bluetooth audio and phone streaming, iPod, iPhone and USB playback. There is also an integrated satellite navigation system and wi-fi hub. All the in-car infotainment systems use a central LCD screen, controlled via a central dial.

The interior boasts elegantly functional designed seats, wrapped with leather upholstery, supporting the high performance for an unrivaled experience.
