SHELL ADVANCE LAUNCHES FULL RANGE OF SCOOTER OILS WITH DUCATI CORSE RIDER ANDREA DOVIZIOSO AS SPECIAL GUEST & LAUNCHES EXPRESS OIL CHANGE AT SELECTED SHELL STATIONS

It has been a quiet weekend for Yours Truly. Didn't do much last friday except go to a Shell Advance launch for their newest range of scooter lubricants. Well, it still is Chinese New Year week you know. Anyway, the new products launched comprised of the fully synthetic Shell Advance 4T Ultra Scooter with PurePlus Technology 5W-40, synthetic technology Shell Advance 4T AX 7 Scooter 10W-40 and Shell Advance Scooter Gear Oil.

These new additions complement the Shell Advance 4T AX 5 Scooter 15W-40 oil that has been in the market since 2014. What Shell has done is basically come out with a complete motor oil range for small scooters which we see all over the country. I think its a great business decision as scooters hold an 11% market share in motorcycle sales annually.

The need for a specific motor oil boils down to the engines. Scooter engines are usually smaller, run at higher revolutions per minute (RPM) and operate at higher temperatures.  They also use an automatic instead of a manual clutch. All of these require an engine oil that is slightly different from what you could use in a sports bike where there is a manual clutch, a less stressed engine due to a better power to weight ratio AND the fact that most larger capacity bikes are water cooled. The scooters and smaller cc bikes are usually air cooled and actually depend more on the lubricant to help keep the bike cool. And so a specially formulated oil is quite essential if you get what I mean. When asked, the oils should be good for an average of 3,000km between oil change (no 10,000km intervals okay? These are highly stressed small engines below 250cc here).

The scooter oil launch, which was graciously attended by Ducati MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso and the team press manager Julian Thomas kept the other guests of honour, members of the Desmo Owners Club Malaysia entertained by basically just being there, taking selfies with the Ducati owners and answered some questions at the event press conference. They also tossed some Yee Sang for prosperity. Mr Dovizioso was down in Malaysia for Ducati testing in Sepang.

Aside from the scooter oil launch, Shell Advance also introduced an express oil change service for motorcycles with engines below 250 cc at selected Shell retail stations nationwide as part of its efforts to provide more convenience to customers. The pilot initiative called the Shell Advance MotoCare Express (SAMCE) is being tested during this Chinese New Year festive season at 12 Shell retail stations in the Klang Valley, Northern region, Southern region and the East Coast.

The packaging of the service area is quite cool, it being a small shipping container adapted to have space to service two motorcycles and a product display area. It can be easily moved on a prime mover truck to any location that is deemed suitable. The launch was conducted at the Shell Station just before the Federal Highway Batu Tiga toll heading towards Shah Alam. If Shell decided to move it to the Shell station located on the other side of the highway heading towards Petaling Jaya, it is just a crane and a truck ride away.

Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd Managing Director Shairan Huzani Husain said that SAMCE was an important new addition to the company’s one-stop center for road users, especially motorcyclists, as the company continued to put the `service’ back into the service-stations.

Meanwhile, Shell Advance plans to introduce an express oil change service for motorcycles with engines below 250 cc at selected Shell retail stations nationwide as part of its efforts to provide more convenience to customers.

The Shell Advance MotoCare Express (SAMCE) was first pre-tested at the 2016 Shell Malaysia MotoGP™ to overwhelming success.  The pilot initiative is being tested during this Chinese New Year festive season at 12 Shell retail stations in the Klang Valley, Northern region, Southern region and the East Coast.

Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd Managing Director Shairan Huzani Husain said that SAMCE was an important new addition to the company’s one-stop center for road users, especially motorcyclists, as the company continued to put the `service’ back into the service-stations.

“Quick, convenient, accessible and affordably priced, SAMCE will hopefully help bikers maintain their two-wheelers in good condition, avoid breakdowns and ultimately, reach their destinations safely.  It is very much in line with our #ShellSelamatSampai road safety movement to drive road safety awareness and behavioural change among motorcyclists,” said Shairan.
