On wednesday, the 8th of February 2017, a select group of secondary school students from SMK Sultan Abdul Samad in Petaling Jaya had a once in a lifetime chance to meet up with two of the Mixed Martial Arts competitors from the ONE Championship series through a CSR community initiative spearheaded by Caltex Havoline.
Caltex Havoline brand ambassador and ONE Championship competitor, Ev Ting, along with ONE Championship Vice-President Rich Franklin and local Malaysian athlete Agilan Thani (who is quite a funny bloke and can take up stand up comedy when he retires from competing), showed off a few defensive martial arts moves with the students. The aim is to empower them through these physical fitness activities and inspire them to face life’s toughest challenges with endurance, strength, training and also the use of one's mind whilst doing so.

“At Chevron, we value people. The passion that drives us towards excellence is the same passion that inspires us to commit to giving the best to our partners, customers, and communities. Just as Caltex Havoline puts the fight back in your engine, we want to empower the youth to fight for their dreams,” said Asim Khan, who is Caltex's Area Business Manager - Cluster.
Though the athletes are in the thick of training for the upcoming ONE: Throne of Tiger on 10 February at Stadium Negara, they took time off to bond with the students of SMK Sultan Abdul Samad and taught them a few of their defensive moves that they will be using in their cage fight. Two lucky boys got to learn how to do a choke hold!
As Ev introduced the exercises, he also encouraged the youth to fight hard for their dreams.
“These students have faced various challenges at quite a young age. I readily agreed to join this activity because I wanted to empower the students through physical fitness to develop their strengths and endurance to overcome life’s obstacles,” said Ev.
“This community initiative is the first-of- its-kind for SMK Sultan Abdul Samad. Both the students and teachers are excited to meet the fighters of ONE Championship and the live demonstration is a smart way to inspire the youths – a manner they can resonate with, that is also in line with our values that we practice at our school,” said Puan Zarina Awang, Principal of SMK Sultan Abdul Samad.
I witnessed personally how some of the students there were truly inspired. Some managed some one on one time with Ev, Rich and Agilan. I just stood there and observed what was going on. The thing about some of these community activities is that it covers a lot of different angles. It isn't only education in the form of studies that is covered by such initiatives. This meet up with some athletes from a MMA championship may be slightly different. A unique angle that our young can experience, this time courtesy of Caltex.
After the training exercises, the athletes and Rich spent some time designing tambourines with the youths, writing inspiring messages that speak of what they had learnt from the session.
These collectibles will be auctioned at ONE: Throne of Tigers on 10 February 2017. The proceeds of the auction will be given to the school to carry on their good work with the youths.
