Nasim Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of the Peugeot brand in Malaysia, has introduced to the Malaysian market the new (2017 model year) Peugeot 208 GTi. Aside from the usual equipment upgrade and some cosmetic changes, the chage that has made me the happiest is the new engine.
The new 208 GTi is powered by 208hp 1.6-litre THP (Turbo High Pressure) engine, 8hp more than before. It also makes 300 Nm of torque compared to 275 Nm previously. Combined with the same sweet shifting 6-speed manual (yes, a manual) gearbox, the new 208 GTi should be massive fun. 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds, 3 seconds quicker and a top speed of 230 km/h.
When I tested the previous 200hp version, I enjoyed it thoroughly and then I basically made it my number #1 choice in my list of junior hot hatchbacks back in 2015 (some of the cars in the list are no longer on sale like the Swift Sport). It is that good in terms of power delivery and outright performance. Back then when I tested the 208 GTi, its 0-100kmh time was already 6.5seconds on average (Peugeot was conservative) and the car was very fun with a very mobile rear end. You can get the famous one wheel off the ground cornering if you are really aggressive with the car.
When I reviewed it I also mentioned that it was possibly the best overall packaged hot hatch under RM150,000 that money can buy. Worthy of its GTI badging. Now, with even more tweaks towards its performance, things would definitely be better.
The new 208 GTi is now priced at RM143,888 on the road complete with insurance.

The 200hp sensation became an almost instant hit with the hot hatch enthusiasts making it a successful model for the company.

The front end of the new 208 GTi is as seductive as it is striking. The new bumper has sharper and more precise line. The wider front grille and its thicker surround are now fully integrated into the bumper. The front face still impresses with Peugeot’s exclusive light signature that consist of LED daytime running lights for indicators and daytime lighting and the rear LED claw effect tail light ensuring good visibility in all conditions makes the new 208 GTi has a keen look that really stands out.

The seats upholstered in Club Nappa leather with Caro Weave fabric finish. The driving position is further elevated by the full-grain leather steering wheel complete with intuitive controls.
The performance of the new 208 GTi calls for an appropriate braking system. With perforated discs, 302mm diameter at the front and 249mm at the back, the braking system of the new 208 GTi gives you security at any situation. In terms of safety, the new 208GTi is equipped with a comprehensive list of safety features including Stability Control, Traction Control, ABS, EBA and EBFD. It comes with the latest-generation Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which is able to detect the first signs of a sideways skid and helps reduce over steer.
Passive safety features include 6 airbags, front pre-tensioning seatbelts, seatbelt fastening warning system and a collapsible steering column.
