MotoringMY video: The Land Rover Defender's crawler gear in action - Short Video by Motoring-Malaysia on YouTube

Since this is the month of Ramadan things are a bit slow these days. Not many companies do product launches during this time and not many people like conducting business meetings too. So I have the time to give you a short video showing the capability of the recently discontinued Land Rover Defender. Production of the iconic 4x4 has since ceased since early this year ending a 25 year production run.

The Defender in the video you see above (which is on Motoring-Malaysia's YouTube channel - MotoringMY) is from the final few batches of Defenders in Malaysia. It was taken sometime in October last year as I recall and is from my personal video archive. Yes, I know I do not show videos often ,but I will occasionally share some with you folks out there..

The reason I am putting this on is that  I think the capabilities of the Defender should be shared. The car in the video is a 2014/2015 2.2liter Defender Double-Cab Pickup. It has a 2.2liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 120hp and a sizable 360Nm of torque. It could go anywhere as its a Land Rover.

The interesting feature about those equipped with the 2.2liter engine is that it has crawler capability. The first gear of this final diesel engined Defender is very, very short and is essentially a crawler gear. Slot in first gear and the Defender can crawl along at walking pace up and down most terrain. No fuss at all. You do have to supervise it still...this isn't one of those autonomous vehicles... It's a Defender for Godssake!

I hope the soon to be launched (sometime in 2018-2019) Defender replacement will be as fabulous as this old girl.
