At the launch of the 2025 Volvo EX90 fully electrified SUV, Volvo Car Malaysia also launched the facelifted 2025 Volvo XC90 Twin Engine (hybrid) SUV. The facelift as usual brings an update to the exterior styling and most notably upgrades the user interface to bring Volvo Cars’ popular flagship SUV closer to the marque’s fully electric models. Other upgrades to the XC90 is a redesigned cockpit and larger user central display, upgraded suspension and interior materials, and improved sound insulation better than ever refinement and comfort.
(note that all photos here are of the T8 and not the B5)
The new XC90 will be available in two powertrain options. These are the T8 plug-in hybrid or the B5 mild hybrid with recommended retail prices from RM418,888 before any insurance Both variants come with a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine mated to an eight-speed Geartronic transmission which powers all of the wheels (AWD) .
The electric motor in the XC90 Ultra T8 gives it a maximum combined power of 462 hp and 709 Nm of torque that gives it a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of 5.3 seconds and fuel consumption as low as 1.8 litres per 100km (manufacturer's estimates) . On the other hand, the XC90 Ultra B5 has a maximum of 263 hp of power and 390 Nm of torque on tap for a 0-100kmh of 7.7 seconds.
For Malaysia (as usual, very high trim levels and specs), both new Volvo XC90 variants comes with the top Ultra trim featuring a 11.2- inch centre display, 12.3-inch driver display and a head-up display, next-generation Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio, powered and ventilated front seats with memory function and four-way lumbar support, panoramic sunroof with powered sunshade, and four-zone climate control.
Four colours will be offered for the new model year – Onyx Black, Denim Blue, Crystal White, and Vapour Grey – all paired with a Charcoal interior, Charcoal ventilated Nappa leather upholstery, and Grey Ash wood décor.
The Ultra T8 variant of the new XC90 will be offered at no increase in the recommended retail price compared to the previous model year (which is a good thing as this has improved specifications), coming in at RM434,888 for Peninsular Malaysia and RM434,457 for Sabah and Sarawak, while the Ultra B5 variant will retail for RM418,888 and RM418,457 respectively - all before any insurance and because we locally assemble the SUV (and with parts coming in from Volvo's China factory), it is actually cheaper even that in the United Kingdom where the T8 Plug-in Hybrid AWD Ultra can reach £84,150 - or RM486,000. Quite surprising isn't it.
The new XC90 comes with five-year complimentary digital services, 24-hour roadside assistance, and unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty. For further peace of mind, the high- voltage battery pack is warrantied for eight years.
I personally like the XC90, and actually great that they are still offering this in a plugin hybrid form as it still offers the best of an electrified drivetrain with the luxury of an internal combustion engine for those worry free long distance drives without a need for planning or stopping for at least twenty minutes to 'refuel'. Add the fact that this has one of the best looking and feeling interiors, you have to run your fingers through the door trim, speaker trim and feel how tactile it feels to understand what I am saying. It feels so good that this is actually what I think Volvo Car should be telling potential customers - their cars are so luxurious and are as good or better than something higher up in the price range. They should start weaving a story on luxury as we already know how safe a Volvo is. And actually, in these day and age, the luxury lifestyle sells.
PRODUCT SUMMARY OF THE FACELIFTED VOLVO XC90
The new exterior design represents the first major facelift for the current generation XC90 model. A new front air intake graphic, slimmed-down headlights, sculpted hood and updated front bumper and fenders provide a contemporary, dynamic upgrade to a timeless and uniquely Scandinavian design.
The refreshed interior comes with a redesigned front cabin. The new XC90’s dashboard has a more horizontal shape than before and incorporates decorative panels made frompremium materials for a more textured finish, split by new vertical air vents. Enhanced illumination contributes to a more luxurious feel at night.
The cabin has been redesigned to be more practical with an additional cupholder and storage space in the centre console, while the wireless phone charger is now separated from the main storage area for more convenience.
Under the bonnet, the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain has 77 kilometres of fully electric range on under the WLTP testing cycle 2 , meaning owners can do most of their daily commutes with zero tailpipe emissions. Volvo Cars’ global data shows that around half of the distance covered by the latest plug-in hybrid Volvo cars is driven on pure electric power 3 .
For longer trips, the hybrid powertrain is paired with an efficient petrol engine to extend range by more than 800 km 4 , and owners can opt for the full combined power of petrol and electric for constant all-wheel drive or off-road driving.
The B5 mild hybrid variant is assisted by a 48v lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator which can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15 percent in real-world driving. The B5 powertrain has also been upgraded for a more efficient engine combustion cycle with CO 2 emission reductions and fuel economy improvements of up to 2 percent based on the WLTP cycle 2 .
Intuitive, Seamless User Interface
The other big change is in the inside of the new XC90 – a larger, free-standing 11.2-inch central screen with improved pixel density by 21 percent for a sharper resolution.
The central screen allows drivers to access Volvo Cars’ next-generation user interface shared with its fully electric flagship counterpart – the Volvo EX90. The larger screen allowsthe most common apps and controls, such as maps, media and connectivity to be displayed on the same screen, meaning fewer taps to get to the features drivers most often use.
The new user interface is also intuitive, with a contextual bar that learns drivers’ habits and presents the most useful apps according to the situation, such as showing the icon for the 360-degree camera when driving at low speeds or your favourite media streaming app when stopped and charging.
For the XC90 Ultra T8 specifically, the new interface also allows an easier transition between electric, combustion, or hybrid power with the addition of “Drive Modes” on the home screen.
There, drivers can easily access “Pure”, “Hybrid”, and “Performance” modes among others with just a tap.
Legendary Comfort as Standard
The new XC90’s class-leading ride comfort is underpinned by its active chassis with air suspension on all four wheels, providing self-levelling functionality and constant ride height adjustment by monitoring the car, road and driver 500 times per second to give the most comfortable ride possible.
The air suspension can lower itself by 20mm for more aerodynamic efficiency and stability at speed or raise itself by 40mm for off-road driving. Additionally, the electronically controlled damping system continuously monitors and adjusts to road conditions, helping ensure a smooth ride and a dynamic driving experience.
The new XC90 also features improved sound insulation with acoustic foam-filled pillars and a new frequency selective damping system for even less wind and road noise. This is an ideal setting for the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system that can replicate the acoustics of a stage, a jazz club, or Gothenburg’s famed concert hall through 19 speakers located throughout the cabin. The audio system features the company’s proprietary Nautilus™ and Continuum™ speaker technologies, tuned for a clear, balanced listening experience with Dirac Unison™ Tuning.
One of the safest cars on the road
As with every Volvo car, the new XC90 is one of the safest cars available. It is equipped with an advanced safety cage as well as the comprehensive Safe Space Technology to help keep occupants and other road users safe.
With advanced Pilot Assist as well as automatic braking and steering assistance, the XC90’s active and passive safety technologies have earned it a five-star rating from Euro NCAP and the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award among many accolades.
