Mercedes-Benz Malaysia recently celebrated the graduation of the 11th batch of the Apprentice Training Centre (ATC)‘s Automotive Mechatronic training programme. Following three years of training, the ATC graduates are now qualified to provide world-class after sales services for Mercedes-Benz valued customers, and will be assigned to Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s nationwide dealer network.
During the ceremony, 25 graduates received three certifications; Mercedes-Benz Automotive Mechatronic Training Certificate; Mercedes-Benz Qualified Maintenance Technician Certificate; and National Dual Training System (NDTS) Certificate, which is equivalent to Malaysia Skills Certificate Level 3, recognised by the Department of Skills Development under the Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysia.
The Class of 2016 Best Student Award was presented to Mohd Farhan Bin Mokhtar. The 24-year old who hails from Alor Setar, Kedah was recognised for his outstanding achievement over the three-year training period in the areas of academics, performance, attendance and attitude.
All of this training in human capital is super important and necessary in ensuring a skilled workforce. Do you know that Mercedes Benz spends approximately RM100,000 per student for the duration of the course? The students who graduate are confirmed a place in the Mercedes dealer network and is bonded for a period of four years.
The course, which usually begins every year in June is usually advertised in the local newspapers as well as on the MB Malaysia website. This is the 11th batch of graduates and these technical graduates play an important part in the Mercedes Benz after sales division. These days vehicles are packed with both mechanical and electrical parts which require a technician to be skilled in both. So mechatronic training is in high demand and these graduates would be prized assets in the automotive industry.
To those that think technical certification isn't a good career choice I have to say that it actually allows good opportunities. There are many heads of departments within Mercedes Benz who started out as technicians and there are those that come from courses like this. Some are Service managers at Mercedes Benz, some are heads in dealerships, some even end up becoming General Managers. Some end up opening their own specialist workshops It all depends on the individual's effort actually but the best thing about this is that a company like Mercedes Benz treasures and nourishes human capital. Human capital builds nations.
And a foreign company actually assists our country in doing so.

About the Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Apprentice Training Centre
Initiated in September 1984, the ATC was established with the objective of instilling
‘self-reliant learning’ and ‘life-long learning’ philosophies among Malaysian youth. To
date, 778 highly-skilled apprentices have graduated from the initiative.
As a prerequisite to acceptance into the training programme, interested candidates
have to undergo a strict selection process which involves a pre-enrolment

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Corporate Communications
company. Candidates then have to attend a face-to-face interview by the
Recruitment Panel which gives the final approval to candidates who qualify to enrol
in the training programme.
The training programme consists of 48 courses over a three-year training period,
and is based on a curriculum comprising 70 per cent practical training; which also
includes 30 per cent on-the-job training; and 30 per cent theory.
In addition to undergoing technical training, apprentices are also equipped with
presentation skills, analysing skills, decision making skills, system thinker,
mentoring skills, self-discipline, and team work skills, which are essential for life-
long career advancement. Employment is guaranteed via bond upon completion of
the training programme.
In addition to the Automotive Mechatronic training programme, the ATC also
provides a structured certification ladder for existing technicians who are keen to
upgrade their skills and knowledge.
The Apprentice Training Centre is a 55,000 sq ft facility and staffed by 13 dedicated
trainers. The training facility is equipped with state-of-the-art training equipment,
