Here is the official statement by Honda Malaysia as regards the recent death of a Honda City driver. Note the following:
1. Honda Malaysia has inspected the vehicle involved.
2. The vehicle involved in this crash was included in a Malaysian Product Update (recall) announced on May 21, 2015, requiring replacement of the SDI inflator of the Takata driver’s front airbag.
3. Since 2015, this vehicle involved in this crash has been included in both driver’s Takata airbag inflator and passenger’s Takata airbag inflator recalls.
4. Three mailed recall notices related to those recalls were sent to the owner. Our records indicate that the recall repair was never completed.
Honda has done quite a lot to try rectify the situation caused by a supplier that EVERYONE uses. According to the above, three mailed recall notices were sent out. I think sometimes people either change addresses or move or are somehow never bothered to follow-up with something which they think is mere day to day transport. Maybe the next step was calling them on the telephone (like how Subaru did to me recently as regards the same issue). But alas, you and I know that it was too late.
Do not take this lightly if you have a Honda. It does seem Honda cars seem to suffer the most from this faulty airbag system. Take note and take the necessary.
Here are the list of cars affected. I suppose if you had bought a reconditioned unit from a parallel importer you should also get it checked. Obviously.
