We were in Langkawi the other day to test drive the new Proton x 70 Premium variant. Proton's first ever SUV, in fully specified Premium form, is fully packed with Active Safety Features. We tried out the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and 360 Camera systems. All are part of what Proton calls the ADAS, or Advanced Driver Assistance System.
The first video you see below shows the X70's 360 surround camera in action. It allows you to monitor your surroundings at parking speeds. It does not work when you are in Reverse gear but works when in Drive. Maximum speed is approximately 15kmh so you can't use it for normal drive speeds. Of course you shouldn't in the first place.
To highlight the function, we were driving the X70 with the front windscreen and side mirrors covered. The 360 camera worked well, as it should.
The next video shows the X70's Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems demonstrated to us. Instructor Adian showed us how these systems work. No Proton X70 were harmed in this demonstration.
The FCW warns the driver of an imminent crash with an object in front by sending out warning beeps as well as showing a visual warning on the instrument panel. It will not slow down the car for you. So take note.
At speeds under 30kmh, the Autonomous Emergency Braking AEB system will work, but this is something based on first generation technology so while it will try to mitigate a collision, it isn't something to fully depend upon. But here, ut works quite well.
