The 28th of September 2018 was a sad and unforgettable day for the residents of the City of Palu, Indonesia. The city on the island of Sulawesi was hit by a 5-metre-high tsunami shortly after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred 80 km north of the city. The earthquake killed 2,256 people, with over 1,549 injured. It was a tragedy which affected Palu and four other inhabited places. In an effort to aid the victims of the aftermath of the disaster, Volvo Trucks Malaysia has donated RM 10,650 to Mercy Malaysia, a humanitarian aid organisation that is dedicated to helping those in need of support in Palu.
MERCY Malaysia or the Medical Relief Society Malaysia is a non-profit organisation which focuses on providing medical relief, sustainable health related development and risk reduction activities for vulnerable communities in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Founded in 1999, MERCY Malaysia relies solely on funding and donations from organisations and generous individuals to continue their services to provide humanitarian assistance to beneficiaries, both in Malaysia and abroad.
Volvo Trucks Malaysia has been one of the few multi-national companies from Malaysia that have decided to assist the rebuilding of Palu. The money donated will help MERCY Malaysia have the funds to help those in need in Palu. According to new reports, a month after the quake, 206,524 people have fled and been made refugees, there is a looming healthcare crisis and many wound infections due to infrastructure destruction and ad hoc conditions, in spite of disinfectant dumping by air, water remains unclean, and 1,309 people are still missing. Survivors are scattered throughout the region rather than in a single area
