The New, Facelifted Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Launched in Malaysia - A Day After the Launch of the C-Class Sedan!

And so....a day after the launch of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia decided to launch the new, facelifted C-Class Coupe over at Cameron Highlands. This was during the media drive of the C-Class Sedan and I was fortunate enough to witness this event last Friday, 2nd November 2018. The new C-Class Coupe range for Malaysia consists of the Mercedes-Benz C 200 Coupé and C 300 Coupé. These, are fully imported however.

Like the C200 sedan, the new Mercedes-Benz C 200 Coupé is powered by the new four-cylinder 1.5liter equipped with the 48 V technology and EQ boost starter/alternator mild hybrid system which, for lack of a better word, boosts the power of the turbocharged 1.5liter by a little bit - 184hp and 13hp with 280Nm 160Nm torque combined to give this small capacity coupe some added zest. It makes more than the outgoing C200 Coupe with its 2.0liter turbocharged engine actually. Such is the technology these days.

The C300 still keeps a 2.0liter engine although it is a M264 series engine too. Same model, different capacity.

Unlike the sedan variants, both C-Coupes are AMG-Line variants. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has basically decided that the C-Coupe must show off its sporty intents. Good move as the coupe does look its best in the AMG-Line and above forms. Design touches includes the diamond radiator grille with pins in chrome plus and AMG-specific front apron with new geometry, sporty air intakes and its chromed trim element.

The Coupe, like the sedan gets a raft of additions and changes inside and out making this popular coupe even more complete than ever. The centre console has a flowing trim element with new materials as options: open-pore brown walnut or open-pore anthracite oak can be opted. Magma grey/black are available as new interior colours.

The KEYLESS-GO starting function is standard. The start/stop button comes in a new turbine-look design. The vehicle key also features a new design. Customers have a choice between three variants here: black with high-gloss chrome surround, white with chrome surround or high-gloss white with matt chrome surround.

The C-Class has a new display concept which includes an optional, fully-digital instrument cluster with the three visually distinguishable styles "Classic", "Sport" and "Progressive". The C-Class has touch-sensitive controls in the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the functions of the instrument cluster and of the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.

As stated above, the facelifted C-Class models now sport a new generation of four-cylinder engines. So the both have this new engine, the M264 series engine in 1.5 for the C200 Coupe and 2.0 for the C300 Coupe. The Mercedes-Benz C 200 Coupé 1.5 litre turbocharged four is also fitted with an additional 48-volt on-board network with a belt-driven alternator, introduced as EQ Boost which creates the conditions for additional functions that help to reduce fuel consumption even further, while improving agility and refinement characteristics.

When accelerating, the EQ Boost can assist the 135 kW (184 hp) engine with an additional 10 kW (13 hp), bridging the brief moment until the turbocharger has built up its full charge pressure. During deceleration, the starter/alternator recuperates kinetic energy and charges the battery. A mild hybrid system which does seem to work - it felt linear when I tried it in the C200 Sedan during the media drive.

The C300 offers more performance of course...and that, is the one you should get as the 258hp and 370Nm torque combo is addictive. Both are rear wheel drive and use the 9-GTronic automatic transmission.

There are also more active safety features like Blind Spot monitoring system and lane keeping assist in the cars. The C-class coupes have gotten better.
