UD Trucks Extra Mile Challenge 2018 Finals - Malaysian Driver Wins Special Award for the Most Cargo-Friendly Driving Category

The UD Trucks’ Extra Mile Challenge 2018 Finals were held recently at the UD Experience Center in the UD Ageo corporate headquarters over in Japan. There were nine finalists which were selected from 300 initial participants who were the winners of their respective qualifying rounds which were held in Japan, Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Qatar and Thailand. This time around, the Malaysian representative managed to capture the Special Awards for the Most Cargo-Friendly Driving category.

Malaysia’s representative was Encik Muhammad Khairul Bin Abd Halim from Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd. He brought home the Special Award for the Most Cargo-Friendly Driving category in the UD Quester. Muhammad Khairul had said in the interview that he was thrilled to be able to come this far into the competition and that he had learned a lot from all the contestants at this global round.

He also added that he will definitely share what he has learned with his truck driving colleagues after the competition. It definitely is an eye opener for him to be able to see how the best drives their trucks and how these best practices make them better drivers.

The UD Trucks Extra Mile Challenge is the UD Trucks' signature annual competition for truck drivers. It reproduces an actual truck operation cycle, assessing drivers in the three key areas of pre-driving inspection, fuel efficiency and safe driving, and maneuvering and parking. The UD Extra Mile Challenge is a quest to find the ultimate driver, measuring effectiveness in operational cost and reduced downtime in addition to safe and skilled driving.

Contestants compete in either the  UD Quester or UD Quon heavy-duty trucks. It helps make drivers gain more awareness about driving properly and it also rewards diligent drivers by offering them a chance to go overseas and meet other truck drivers from other countries. This is one way where the reward isn't just in the monetary sense. And for UD Trucks, the quest to find the ultimate driver is part of its vision of smart logistics providing solutions to society’s needs.

Takamitsu Sakamaki, UD Trucks President and Representative Director, observed that the trucks and the people who drive them represent the interface between smart logistics and the society. According to him, this is the reason UD Trucks support driver development with initiatives such as the Extra Mile Challenge, to raise their awareness of what is essential for the ultimate driver.

UD Trucks believe that people depend on logistics, and logistics depends on people. With that basic belief in question, UD trucks are designed with the driver in mind and the UD Extra Mile Challenge demonstrates the company’s commitment to driver education and motivation, while shining the light on the unsung heroes of smart logistics...i.e, the truck drivers. It serves as a symbol for UD Trucks’ going the extra mile for customer success and commitment to support all aspects of smart logistics.

The UD Extra Mile Challenge winners for 2018 were Eko Yulianto at PT Duta Lintas Nusa from Indonesia in the UD Quester and Mohd Hisham at BHS Kinetic Pte Ltd. from Singapore, in the UD Quon.

The previous year saw a Malaysian driver come up tops in the UD Quester category. Let's hope that Malaysia does well in 2019.
