Proton Announces That They Have Received Over 10,000 Bookings For Upcoming X70 SUV - 2,000 From Their Online Site - Some Thoughts

The Proton X70 SUV hasn't been launched as yet but Proton have announced that they have collected over 10,000 bookings for their first ever SUV. Nearly 2,000 of those bookings came from their new online booking website and it seems to show that online bookings for Proton vehicles is promising.

Bookings for the upcoming X70 was first made available from 8 September 2018 with online bookings having started on 17th October onwards. Proton is actually thankful as the response from Malaysians has been very encouraging overall.

However, according to Dr Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton, the company hopes that everyone will be a little more patient as they make the final preparations for the upcoming launch. As this will be the first Proton SUV as well as the first car to be jointly developed by Proton and Geely, they are working hard to ensure it meets the expectations of buyers. Aside from the X70 itself, Proton is also investing heavily in upgrading their outlets and dealerships to well equipped 3S and 4S outlets so that they have the necessary sales and after sales resources to support such an important product.

It is important in many ways...Proton's first SUV and the first vehicle under a revitalised, joint venture Proton. All lot of hopes and dreams hang on this first model in many ways.

Whilst the number of bookings are extremely positive for a SUV which is the same size as a Honda CRV (or very close to one), we still are not sure of how much it will be priced. It is super packed with technology, but Malaysians are somehow not that swayed in terms of technology. Take for example the Kia Forte and its replacement the Kia Cerato.

The Kia Forte was a C segment sedan which had everything inside it in terms of specification. It was priced so reasonably well at around the RM80,000 price range. Many bought the car here but when its replacement came out, it had more featured and a lot of technology inside it but it was then priced at over the RM100,000 price range... and sales slowed down drastically. The Cerato looked better, performed better and had everything inside it but it was priced to compete directly against the Honda Civic and people just decided to buy the Honda.

This is the variable factor that may play and important point with the X70. I hope Proton will price it super right for the super picky Malaysian car buyer!

Fingers crossed.
