UMW Toyota Announces Airbag Sensor Replacement Service Campaign For Toyota Corolla Altis, Lexus NX and Lexus RX Models

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), the official distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia, has announced a Special Service Campaign (SSC) to inspect and if required, replace the airbag sensor of certain units of the Toyota Corolla Altis, Lexus NX and Lexus RX (above) models which are in Malaysia. This affects cars manufactured bewteen June 2015 to January 2016 distributed and sold by UMW Toyota and Lexus Malaysia. If you are an owner, do take note of the details herein.

This SSC was announced following Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announcement on the 31st of January 2018 for a global Special Service Campaign regarding a faulty Airbag Sensor. According to TMC, the number of affected are 2,800 units of Toyota Corolla Altis, and around 500 units of Lexus NX and Lexus RX manufactured between June 2015 to January 2016 and distributed by UMWT and Lexus Malaysia.

Toyota owners can also visit Toyota’s Special Service Campaign webpage at toyota.com.my to check whether their vehicle is affected through Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Checker. Those that have uploaded the Toyota Drive Apps can also check Toyota’s SSC page and VIN Checker. Information on other vital SSCs are also available at the website. Owners of affected cars should contact any authorised Toyota service centre or call the Toyota Toll Free number 1800-8- TOYOTA (869682) to find out more.

For Lexus owners, customers can contact Lexus authorised dealers nationwide or contact its toll free number 1800 88 53987 (1-800- 88-LEXUS) or visit lexus.com.my

According to Toyota, the airbag sensor defect relates to manufacturing issues where is allows a posibility that the insulation of Integrated Circuit (IC) chips in the affected Pressure sensors and G sensors could peel off over time, creating an open circuit in the IC chip. If this were to occur, the airbag warning light will light up, This may cause the side/curtain airbags and/or front airbags to become deactivated and will not deploy when required to (especially in a crash where it could be saving a life).

Right now, TMC is still working on obtaining the necessary parts for the SSC and when the parts are available, UMW Toyota will notify affected owners to request them to bring their cars to an authorised Toyota or Lexus authorized service centre to make the necessary replacements. The work should take about 30 minutes to 4 hours (depending on model) and while it can all costs involved for the replacement will be borne by UMWT.

So take note people. You have to note that right now, UMW Toyota is still waiting for the replacement parts. Owners will be called when it is time to get the fix done. Till then, drive safe.
