One of Jaguar Land Rover’s newest engine, the 250PS 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine has been recognised as one of the 10 Best Engines for 2018 by WardsAuto, the people that keep track of the automotive industry. The Ingenium engine technology was first introduced in 2015 with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with petrol engine variants entering production in April 2017.
For WardsAuto's10 Best Engines of 2018, a total of 32 new or significantly improved powertrains from a number of automotive manufacturers were tested by their editors in real-life, on-road driving conditions. These engines were tested in terms of maximum power output, fuel economy, noise characteristics, implementation of new technology as well as some other criteria.
Ingenium engines in both diesel and petrol feature advanced, fully variable valve train technology, combined with a low-friction turbocharger, for performance, enhanced responsiveness, emissions controls and maximum fuel efficiency.
The petrol variant that won is the all-aluminium Ingenium 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine delivers performance, efficiency, emissions friendly and refinement without compromise. Jaguar’s first compact SUV, the E-PACE, is the latest JLR model to feature the 250PS Ingenium engine. It enables the premium compact E-Pace SUV to accelerate from 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds and delivering fuel economy of up to 7.69liters/100km. Good for a SUV. Hopefully the E-Pace's Malaysian launch will be soon.
The engines are available across most of the JLR line-up, the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine is available in 250PS and 300PS versions. Aside from the E-Pace mentioned above, the engines are fitted to the current Jaguar XE to the Jaguar F-TYPE, the Land Rover Discovery Sport to the latest Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
They are the key to JLR's low-emissions strategy. Very important as these days, manufacturers are taxed for high emissions in most countries. The Ingenium family of engines are mostly produced at Jaguar Land Rover’s £1 billion Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, England. But since July 2017 the Ingenium 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine has also been manufactured in the company’s Chinese engine plant for Chery Jaguar Land Rover vehicles sold in China.
The engines are the first step in a cleaner Jaguar Land Rover. Their current target is that from 2020 onwards, every new JLR vehicle will have the option of electrification and the company intends to continue investment in ultra-clean petrol and diesel engines. So winning a place in the list of Best Engines is a very good confidence booster for the company.
