UMW Toyota are trying to keep things fresh over here as they've opened the order books for new variants of the Toyota Fortuner - the 2.4 VRZ 4x4 & 2.4 VRZ 4X2, the upgraded Toyota Hilux and the Toyota Innova 2.0X.
Let's start with the one that interests me the most - the Toyota Fortuner (Why? Well, I prefer SUVs over Pick-ups and MPVs).
The Fortuner range now gets two new turbo diesel variants – the Fortuner 2.4 VRZ 4x4 and Fortuner 2.4 VRZ 4x2. Both these VRZ variants are positioned between the top-of-the-line Fortuner 2.7 SRZ 4x4 and the base Fortuner 2.4 4x4. The new variants are in line with the design theme of ‘Luxury & Prestigious’ of which its design brief combines a tough image with refined and sophisticated styling and lots of practicality - The Fortuner is after all a SUV with a 3-row, 7-seater cabin. So it is practical, and tough. I think the sophistication comes from the fact that it is a Toyota. The badge is perceived as something of value already.
Anyway, like the Fortuner 2.7 SRZ 4x4, the two new Fortuner VRZ variants come with additional equipment among which include Bi-LED projector headlamps, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), 7 SRS Airbags, Automatic air-conditioning, Leather seats, Power Rear Door (which can be opened and closed at the touch of a button), front LED-type fog lamps, and Cruise control. The Fortuner 2.7 SRZ 4x4 and Fortuner 2.4 VRZ 4x4 variants now come with Downhill Assist Control (DAC) and all variants now come rear disc brakes. The rear disc brakes is a nice touch. I like this more than the power rear door simply because rear disc brakes increases braking consistency by a fair bit - Its 'All About The Drive' remember?
The Upgraded Toyota Hilux
As before, there are 6 variants to choose from. Major enhancements have been made to the Hilux'S convenience and comfort features following customer feedback. These include cruise control, automatic air-conditioning, USB charging ports, and an additional vent to bring cool air to the rear passengers for a more comfortable journey.
The Toyota Hilux 2.8G and 2.4G AT variants, come with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) which can help prevent the vehicle from spinning out of control. There is also Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Active Traction Control (A-TRC). VSC has now also been added to the Hilux 2.4G with manual transmission, along with HAC and A-TRC fitted to the automatic variants. The Hilux 2.8G also comes with Downhill Assist Control (DAC) to make driving down a steep slope easier and safer. Safety has been stepped up further by expanding the availability of 7 airbags to the 2.4G AT variant as well.
Finally, the Toyota Innova
The new Toyota Innova 2.0X is now the new top of the line variant in the Malaysian Innova range. The MPV gets some crossover styling on the outside with a lot more black plastic cladding on the bottom part of the car. So it could be said that UMW Toyota have done a Crossover MPV as it tries to look rugged but retains the spacious and flexible cabin space of a 7 seater MPV.
The Innova 2.0X is essentially an Innova 2.0G with more additional exclusive equipment. These include LED lights, premium combination leather package, 6-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat, Captain’s seats for the second row, and larger alloy rims.
The entire Innova range now qualifies for the maximum 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating as all variants – including the new Innova 2.0X – are fitted with 7 SRS airbags, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and an Emergency Stop Signal (ESS). Additionally, all variants have ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist.
So there you go. UMW Toyota have added more equipment to three of their vehicles. You get a lot more kit from Toyota these days. I suppose this is because people have been demanding more kit for their Toyota and that there is also a need to entice people in an era where competition is super stiff.
The prices for the models are as follows:
Toyota Innova– from RM107,800
Toyota Fortuner–from RM169,800
Toyota Hilux –from RM87,200
As with all the latest models offered by UMW Toyota Motor, all come with a 5-year warranty with unlimited mileage, subject to terms and conditions (The Hilux warranty is 5-year warranty with 150,000km mileage).
