Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Launches The Locally Assembled Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0L - Intro Price of RM139,988 until 31st December 2017

The Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0L is now officially on sale in Malaysia at an introductory price of RM139,988 until the end of 2017. This car is locally assembled over at the Tan Chong Motors Assemblies plant in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur and will be sold beside the larger engined Outlander 2.4L. This adds another model into Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia's lineup and also allows a more reasonable entry price to those that are interested in buying the Outlander but not interested in paying the higher price of the 2.4.

So what is different about the 2.0 over the 2.4? Well, firstly the Outlander 2.4L has a retail price of RM171,000+++. You get to save a ton of money if you buy this smaller engined version and speaking about the engine, this Outlander 2.0L engine makes 145PS and 196Nm of torque. It is normally aspirated and sends its power to all of its wheels via the INVECS-III CVT Transmission.

Yes, this is an all-wheel drive SUV for the masses. The more affordable model makes sense in a period where vehicle sales are dominated by a few brands, where some brands are not hitting sales forecasts and that loan approvals are ever tightening. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has decided that this 2.0L is one of their answers to the situation. Giving better value for your Ringgit. And hopefully things pick up for them too.

The Outlander's AWD system is not an on demand 4WD system like most other urban runabout type SUVs in the market. The Multi Select AWD system used here has three modes- the 4WD Eco, 4WD Auto and the 4WD Lock (which is quite unique as it allows the center diff to be locked for more traction in tough situations). Definitely not the average school run vehicle.

Of course, some may question the need for this complexity in a car that is basically on road rather than off road. But Mitsubishi feel that there is a niche to be filled and they also say that the 2.0L is efficient enough to be able to handle the drivetrain and the added weight (the 2.4L weighs 1530kg, expect this to weigh about 50kg less in my opinion). It should be able to move around like a D segment sedan in terms of outright performance. Not fast, but adequate. In terms of fuel economy, Mitsubishi claims that the 2.0L can achieve 12.6km/liter (approx) combined mileage.

But the kit is good inside. As a family vehicle it has seven seats (the rearmost row for kids of course), AWD, seven airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Active Stability and Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, ISOFIX, a Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body construction, a reverse camera, a decent infotainment system and a Rest Reminder warning system (to remind the driver to take a break on long drives).

Three colours are available for the Outlander 2.0L. Red Metallic, Solar White and a new colour called Ruby Black which you see in the vehicle at the start of the article. Oh, it also comes with Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia's 5 year factory unlimited mileage factory warranty.

Not bad. This may not be the fastest around but it is pretty well equipped.

Oh, what other differences from the 2.4L? Well, there are no other badges on the 2.0L other than the 'Outlander' lettering. The 2.4 has the '2.4 MIVEC' badging. It also does not have a sunroof like the 2.4. That's about it really.
