Volkswagen Malaysia has officially launched the new Volkswagen Vento sedan in Malaysia. The word 'Vento' means 'wind' in Italian and Portuguese. The locally-assembled Vento is available in three variants; the Trendline , Comfortline and Highline. Prices are from RM79,888 onwards. There is an early bird discount of RM2,000 if you place a booking now. Stocks are limited for this offer.
Two engine options actually!!! Bringing prospective buyers more variety and choice.
For those that want a compact German engineered sedan and is willing to pay for turbocharged performance, the Vento Highline is powered by the 1.2l turbocharged direct injection TSI engine with an output of 105PS. Paired with the 7-speed automatic transmission DSG with a maximum torque of 175Nm, the Vento is the sedan with the highest torque in its class. With superior drivability and performance, fuel consumption is remarkable at 5.5l per 100km. The Vento Highline is also rated 5-star by ASEAN NCAP for its range of safety features including Electronic Stability Control (ESC). It also comes with larger 16inch wheels and tyres.
Those that feel the need for a quality product but are feel that RM93,888++ is beyond their budget there are the non-turbocharged versions that come with the 1.6liter MPI engine and torque convertor type transmission that we have seen in the outgoing Polo Sedan. The Vento 1.6l Comfortline and Trendline comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission gearbox with Tiptronic function with an output of 105PS,maximum torque of 153Nm and fuel consumption of 6.5l per 100km. These variants have the smaller 15inch wheels and tyres. These two variants have a 4-star ASEAN NCAP rating by the way.
You readers can tell that the Vento is essentially the Polo Sedan that was sold previously. It has been renamed to the Vento in line with what Volkswagen sells globally. The Vento name is used to sell this car in other markets globally and with the newly introduced TSI engine and DSG equipped car, Volkswagen Malaysia has followed suit.
I asked Mr Armin Keller, Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Malaysia during the Q&A session on the Vento and its acceptance in India, a country where the Vento is sold with the same 1.2liter engine and DSG drivetrain. Mr Keller stated that the Vento is one of their best selling models over there and can handle the demanding nature of the roads of India. He also added that both the TSI engine and DSG gearbox has also been tweaked and parts changed to cope with the demands after the recent TSI and DSG issues faced here in Malaysia and globally. The technology given is a very high level, and it is still the same but parts in the engine has been revised to cope with heavier demands by their customers.
I do believe that Volkswagen are being honest about this. If the 1.2TSI and 7 speed DSG combo can take the traffic in megacities like Mumbai (approx. 20 million in the metro area) and New Delhi (approx 21 million people in the metro area), it should be able to cope here. I mean, what is the Klang Valley with over 7 million people compared to the two? Of course, to those that are skeptical, there is the Vento 1.6l Comfortline and Trendline. Volkswagen Malaysia has now decided to offer more choice for its customers instead of one variant for each model. This is a good thing.
