Today Mercedes Benz Malaysia announced their 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign. Their CSR campaign is guided by four core subject matters - road safety, the arts and culture, investing in knowledge and corporate volunteering. And at a special event earlier this morning, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia today announced contributions of over RM200,000 for initiatives that support the growth and development of Malaysian society. Recipients of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia 2016 sponsorship are, Driven Communications, for its initiative of promoting safe road travels; the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac); as well as education NGO and institution, Teach for Malaysia; and Monfort Boys Town.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is continuing its collaboration on the MobileKids initiative with Driven Communications, whom you folks know was founded by Paul Tan (who is obviously the most famous automotive blogger in Malaysia - Paultan.org), to promote safe road travelling with the Child Car Seat Rental Programme. The programme, which was earlier spearheaded by Driven Communications in 2015, aims to educate families on road safety by providing child car seats for rental on first-come-first-served basis. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s involvement in the initiative last year saw a contribution of 110 child car seats. This year, the company is contributing an additional 135 child car seats worth RM50,000, bringing it to a total contribution of 245 child car seats. This is a very good initiative as you know we still see parents putting their children on the lap. As if the hands of the parent is strong enough to hold on to a child in a crash. It isn't okay. Please also note that MOKI the MobileKids mascot was present - see the pic above.
As for Arts and Culture, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia announced an additional sponsorship of RM120,000 to KLPac. As one of the founding sponsors of KLPac, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has contributed over RM1.2 million to date to promote the Malaysian performing arts scene. Founders of KLPac, Mr. Joe Hasham and Dato' Faridah Merican were present at the event. I had a nice time chatting with them. No. Not about cars but about other stuff of course. Unlike most motorheads, I do breathe in other stuff instead just of petrol fumes. Dato' Faridah was courteous and very approachable. She has been a powerhouse in the Malaysian performing arts together with Joe Hasham, who is as gifted and extremely jovial in nature. KLPac is something different that is needed to feed the soul in other ways we are accustomed to.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is also contributing over 200 units of pre-owned computers to primary schools and non-profit organization, Teach for Malaysia. Through this initiative, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia aims to enrich the learning experience among students. Teach for Malaysia and Monfort Boys Town will receive 50 computers each, while three vernacular primary schools will each receive 35 computers.
I learnt from MDM Prabha Sundram, External Relations Director of Teach For Malaysia that the organisation is unique in that it works with the Ministry of Education to bring back skilled Malaysians who are abroad to teach in the country especially in the rural areas. I actually did not believe that Teach For Malaysia is more instrumental in bringing back more Malaysians to teach (for about two years or so under a contract in rural areas) than even government linked outfits like TalentCorp. You need passion for stuff like this. Not just the lure of money. It is still good to hear that there are Malaysians out there willing to sacrifice for the wellbeing of others.
Meanwhile, in support of initiatives undertaken by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s employees in the interest of society and the common good, the company also announced the continuation of its annual celebrations for children during festive occasions. As the first company in Malaysia that encourages its employees to share
personally-selected gifts with children who are in need, the programme provides the opportunity for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia staff to bring cheer to underprivileged children.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia will extend its support to employees who will be involved in a beach cleaning programme scheduled for later this year. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also supports its employees who participate in the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon. As a corporate sponsor of the marathon,
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia will be donating RM20,000 to Hospis Malaysia.
What this shows is that large companies like Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is passionate not only about delivering products and services. They also give back to society and help development of the society or country where they sell their products and service. Note that what all of the initiatives are to develop and nurture the human resource so that there is progress in human capital instead of just building stuff. A nation must be built by having quality people in it. This makes perfect sense.
